Chapter 7 – The Rescue That Was Never Meant to Succeed

Chapter 7 – The Rescue That Was Never Meant to Succeed
The encrypted message remained on the command center screen.
COME ALONE... OR BURY THEM BOTH.
No signature.
No location beyond the coordinates already traced to St. Catherine Medical Center.
The countdown continued.
2:47:13
Victor stared at the numbers.
Around him, no one dared interrupt the silence.
Finally, Dominic spoke.
"It's exactly what Gabriel wants."
Victor nodded.
"I know."
"If you leave, he'll attack the estate again."
"If you don't..."
Victor looked toward the security camera showing Ethan asleep upstairs.
"...I'll lose Isabella."
Lily stepped forward for the first time.
"What if that's what he wants us to believe?"
Victor turned.
"He has manipulated every decision you've made since Serena entered your life."
She glanced at the screen.
"What if Isabella is real..."
"...but the rescue isn't?"
Dominic understood immediately.
"A second trap."
Lily nodded.
"He wants you emotionally compromised."
Victor's expression remained unreadable.
"Then we stop reacting."
One Hour Later
The mansion's underground garage came alive.
Instead of one convoy...
Three identical black SUVs rolled toward three separate exits.
Each vehicle carried heavily armed bodyguards.
Each appeared to be transporting Victor Blackwood.
Thermal drones flew overhead, feeding live footage into the command center.
Dominic smiled slightly.
"Let's see which one Gabriel follows."
The gates opened simultaneously.
All three convoys disappeared into the Chicago streets.
Inside the surveillance room, technicians tracked every movement.
Within minutes...
One convoy attracted attention.
A black sedan began following it.
Then another.
Then a motorcycle.
Dominic marked each vehicle.
"They took the bait."
Victor remained beside the monitors.
He hadn't left the estate.
Not yet.
Across town...
Gabriel Kane watched the same convoys through hacked traffic cameras.
His lieutenant frowned.
"There are three."
Gabriel calmly sipped his coffee.
"No."
"There are none."
"What?"
Gabriel smiled.
"Victor Blackwood never repeats the obvious."
"He knows we're watching."
"So where is he?"
Gabriel's eyes drifted toward an old blueprint spread across the table.
"Already inside."
Back at the estate...
Lily stood beside Ethan's bed.
The little boy had finally awakened.
His arm rested in a bright blue cast.
He looked frightened.
"Lily?"
"I'm here."
"Is Daddy leaving?"
She hesitated.
"He has something important to do."
Ethan quietly shook his head.
"The bad people want Daddy."
Her heart tightened.
"Who told you that?"
The toddler frowned as if trying to remember.
"The lady."
"Which lady?"
"The one who smells like flowers."
Lily froze.
Isabella never wore perfume.
Serena always did.
"What did she say?"
Ethan whispered,
"She said Daddy would choose."
Meanwhile...
Victor entered the mansion's oldest chapel.
Almost no one knew it existed.
Hidden behind a sliding bookshelf, the narrow stone hallway led beneath the estate.
Dominic followed closely.
"So this is how we're leaving?"
Victor nodded.
"My grandfather built these tunnels during Prohibition."
"They still connect to the old sewer system."
"No cameras."
"No satellites."
"No one outside the family knows."
Dominic looked at him.
"Except..."
Victor finished the sentence.
"...except whoever betrayed us."
Half a mile away...
A maintenance hatch slowly lifted.
Victor and Dominic emerged into an abandoned warehouse.
Waiting inside were four of Victor's most trusted men.
Not soldiers from his organization.
Friends.
Men who had saved his life years earlier.
Marcus Hill.
Adrian Cole.
Jonah Pierce.
Leo Grant.
Victor looked each of them in the eye.
"I need honesty."
Marcus answered first.
"You have it."
"If any of you were compromised..."
"...tell me now."
No one spoke.
Victor nodded once.
"Then we bring my wife home."
At St. Catherine Medical Center...
The abandoned hospital looked lifeless.
Broken windows.
Collapsed fencing.
Rust-covered ambulances.
Nature had begun reclaiming the property years earlier.
Yet Victor immediately noticed something unusual.
Fresh tire tracks.
Recently repaired security cameras.
Heat signatures beneath the building.
Someone had converted the forgotten hospital into a fortress.
Dominic studied his tablet.
"At least thirty armed men."
"Maybe more."
Victor quietly chambered a round.
"We're not here for a war."
"We're here for Isabella."
Inside the hospital...
Isabella sat upright for the first time in years.
Her strength had slowly begun returning.
A young nurse entered carrying breakfast.
"You should eat."
Isabella ignored the tray.
"My son."
The nurse sighed.
"I don't know."
"My husband."
Silence.
"You'll see him soon."
Isabella had heard those words countless times over the years.
They had always been lies.
This time...
Something felt different.
Suddenly—
A faint vibration echoed through the ventilation ducts.
Gunfire.
Very distant.
The nurse's face changed.
"They're here."
Before Isabella could react...
The emergency lights switched on.
Red warning strobes flashed through every hallway.
A loudspeaker announced:
SECURITY BREACH.
Victor's team moved quickly.
Two guards silently fell before they could trigger alarms.
Dominic hacked the first security door.
Marcus covered the rear hallway.
Everything was proceeding perfectly.
Too perfectly.
Victor stopped walking.
Dominic looked back.
"What is it?"
Victor slowly scanned the corridor.
"There are too few guards."
Marcus frowned.
"They're pulling back."
Victor whispered,
"No."
"They're leading us."
Three floors below...
Gabriel watched Victor's progress through surveillance monitors.
One lieutenant laughed.
"They're almost here."
Gabriel shook his head.
"They're exactly where I want them."
He pressed a red button.
Steel blast doors slammed shut throughout the building.
Emergency exits locked automatically.
Dominic's tablet flashed.
"Oh no..."
Victor looked over.
"What?"
"We're trapped."
The hospital suddenly trembled.
Hidden speakers crackled to life.
Gabriel's calm voice echoed through every corridor.
"Welcome, Victor."
"I've waited a long time for this reunion."
Victor remained silent.
"You came for Isabella."
"You always were predictable."
Victor finally answered.
"Show yourself."
Gabriel chuckled.
"In time."
"But first..."
"...I'd like you to meet someone."
A large monitor mounted above the hallway flickered on.
Lily appeared on the screen.
Victor's heart stopped.
She was tied to a chair.
Bruised.
Gagged.
Dominic stared in disbelief.
"That's impossible."
Only minutes earlier, Lily had been inside the estate.
Victor immediately understood.
"No..."
The woman on the monitor slowly lifted her head.
Something wasn't right.
Her face looked identical.
But her eyes...
Her posture...
Victor narrowed his gaze.
Then he smiled for the first time all night.
Gabriel noticed.
"You don't seem surprised."
Victor calmly holstered his weapon.
"Because that's not Lily."
Silence.
Victor looked directly into the camera.
"You chose the wrong bait."
At that exact moment...
Back inside the Blackwood estate...
The real Lily stood beside Ethan's bed as Dominic's secure phone vibrated.
She answered immediately.
Victor's voice came through clearly.
"He's watching the fake."
Lily frowned.
"What fake?"
Victor smiled faintly.
"I knew he'd try to copy our greatest weakness."
Lily slowly looked toward the nursery window.
Standing outside in the garden...
A woman watched the mansion through the rain.
She wore Lily's face.
The same hair.
The same clothes.
The same height.
The woman smiled.
Then quietly disappeared into the darkness before the guards noticed.
Lily's blood ran cold.
Someone wasn't impersonating Isabella.
May you like
Someone had spent months preparing to replace her.
