Chapter 1 - The Falling Crystal

The Blackwood estate had always been quiet in the mornings.

That Tuesday, the silence felt different.

Emily Blackwood stood beneath the enormous crystal chandelier in the grand foyer, one hand resting on the curve of her eight-month pregnant belly.

She had barely taken another step when a sharp metallic snap echoed above her.

Emily looked up.

The chandelier moved.

For one frozen second, she could not understand what she was seeing.

Then the massive fixture tore free from the ceiling.

“Emily!”

Mara’s scream came from the hallway.

The maid dropped the basket of folded towels in her hands and ran.

Emily tried to move, but pregnancy had made her slower and heavier.

The chandelier was already falling.

Mara slammed both hands into Emily’s shoulders.

Emily stumbled sideways and crashed against the wall.

Mara threw herself in the opposite direction.

The chandelier struck the marble floor between them.

The explosion of crystal was deafening.

Glass flew across the foyer.

A golden metal arm spun through the air and smashed into an antique table.

Emily covered her stomach as dust filled her lungs.

Her baby kicked violently.

“Mara!”

“I’m okay.”

Mara pushed herself onto one elbow.

Blood ran from a shallow cut across her forehead.

Emily crawled toward her.

“You saved us.”

Heavy footsteps thundered down the staircase.

Daniel Blackwood appeared above them.

Emily expected terror.

She expected him to run toward his pregnant wife.

Instead, something strange crossed his face.

Disappointment.

It vanished almost immediately.

“What happened?”

Mara slowly stood.

“The chandelier fell.”

Daniel stared at her.

Then his expression hardened.

“You.”

Emily blinked.

“What?”

Daniel rushed down the remaining steps and pointed at Mara.

“You did this.”

Mara stared at him in disbelief.

Daniel’s voice grew louder.

“You’ve been acting strangely for weeks.”

“You’re lying.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“You tried to kill my wife.”

Emily pushed herself upright.

“Daniel, she just saved me.”

“That’s exactly what she wanted you to think.”

Mara’s hands tightened.

Daniel turned toward Emily with the frightened expression of a devoted husband.

“She creates the danger, saves you dramatically, and becomes indispensable.”

Emily looked at the shattered chandelier.

Something about Daniel’s explanation felt wrong.

Very wrong.

Mara walked toward the broken fixture.

She bent down carefully and picked something from the wreckage.

A section of the supporting chain.

She held it beneath the light.

The metal had not snapped naturally.

Half of it had been cleanly cut.

Mara looked directly at Daniel.

Her voice became dangerously calm.

“Tell her.”

Daniel’s face tightened.

“Tell her what?”

Mara raised the damaged chain.

“Tell your wife why someone cut this halfway through.”

Emily’s blood turned cold.

Daniel said nothing.

Mara took another step toward him.

“And tell her why this isn’t the first time you’ve tried to kill her.”

Emily stopped breathing.

May you like

Daniel’s face changed.

And for the first time in her marriage, Emily became afraid of the man standing beside her.
