Chapter 14 - The Rescue

Paramedics entered immediately.
One checked Emily’s pulse.
Another listened to Lily’s heartbeat.
Emily watched the monitor anxiously.
Then the rapid rhythm filled the room.
Strong.
Steady.
Alive.
Emily broke down.
Mara hugged her.
“She’s okay.”
The paramedic smiled.
“Your daughter sounds very determined.”
Emily laughed through her tears.
“She gets that from me.”
Mara shook her head.
“She definitely does now.”
They placed Emily on a stretcher.
As they carried her through the library, she saw the gasoline covering the floor.
The lighter lay only inches away.
If police had arrived seconds later, the outcome could have been very different.
The hallway was crowded with officers.
Crime-scene technicians photographed everything.
The broken keypad.
The wire cutters.
The gasoline can.
The chandelier remains downstairs.
Emily passed Daniel in the foyer.
Two officers held him.
He looked smaller somehow.
Without the tailored suit.
Without the calm smile.
Without his power.
“Emily.”
She did not respond.
“Tell them this is a misunderstanding.”
The stretcher continued moving.
“Emily!”
She turned.
Daniel’s face softened instantly.
It was the old expression.
The loving husband.
The practiced sadness.
For a second, Emily remembered why she had once trusted him.
Then she remembered Lily.
“No.”
Daniel stared at her.
“You’re my wife.”
“Not anymore.”
His mask vanished.
“You’ll regret this.”
Lieutenant Harris stepped between them.
“That’s enough.”
Daniel shouted as they dragged him outside.
Emily watched silently.
Rain had stopped.
Emergency lights reflected across the wet driveway.
Neighbors stood behind police barriers.
Reporters were already arriving.
The perfect Blackwood marriage was ending under flashing lights and handcuffs.
Mara climbed into the ambulance beside Emily.
“You don’t have to come.”
“Yes, I do.”
“Mara.”
“I said I’d protect you.”
Emily squeezed her hand.
“You already did.”
The ambulance doors closed.
As they drove away, Emily looked through the rear window.
The mansion disappeared behind them.
She remembered arriving there after her wedding.
Daniel had carried her across the threshold.
She had imagined raising children there.
Growing old there.
Building memories.
Now it looked like nothing but stone and darkness.
At the hospital, doctors confirmed that Emily and Lily were healthy.
Stress had raised Emily’s blood pressure, but there were no signs of premature labor.
Hours later, Lieutenant Harris arrived.
He carried a thick evidence folder.
“We searched Daniel’s office.”
Emily sat upright.
“And?”
“We found the gambling debts.”
She nodded.
“The insurance policy.”
Another nod.
“The notebook.”
Emily closed her eyes.
Harris continued.
“We also recovered computer records.”
“What records?”
His expression became serious.
“Internet searches.”
Emily stared at him.
“How to disable vehicle brakes.”
“How to disguise poisoning.”
“How to weaken structural chains.”
Emily’s stomach turned.
Then Harris placed one final document on the bed.
“And something else.”
Emily looked down.
It was a financial transfer.
Dated six months earlier.
Daniel had already accepted money from a criminal lender.
The collateral listed on the agreement was chilling.

Expected inheritance proceeds.
Daniel had borrowed millions against money he expected to receive after Emily’s death.
