Chapter 18 - Leaving the Mansion Behind

Emily returned to the Blackwood estate only once.

Police had finished collecting evidence.

The house stood empty.

Mara came with her.

So did Thomas.

Emily entered through the same foyer where the chandelier had nearly killed her.

A pale mark remained on the marble where the fixture crashed.

She stood over it.

Mara watched carefully.

“We can leave.”

“No.”

Emily touched her stomach.

“I need to do this.”

They walked through the rooms.

The dining room where Daniel watched her eat.

The staircase where oil had nearly sent her falling.

The office where his notebook exposed everything.

The library where gasoline still stained part of the wooden floor.

Finally they entered the bedroom.

The bed had been stripped.

Emily looked at Daniel’s empty side.

For years, she had believed safety meant being loved by someone powerful.

Now she understood something different.

Safety came from truth.

From independence.

From people who protected you without demanding ownership of you.

Emily removed her wedding ring.

She placed it on Daniel’s bedside table.

Mara said nothing.

Emily smiled.

“I thought taking this off would hurt.”

“Does it?”

“No.”

They walked downstairs.

Outside, a real-estate representative waited.

Emily sold the estate within weeks.

She accepted less money than the property was worth because she wanted nothing from that place except distance.

She purchased a smaller house near the coast.

It had white walls.

Wide windows.

A wooden porch.

No steel shutters.

No enormous chandelier.

No hidden hallways.

Mara moved nearby.

Emily offered her a position as estate manager.

Mara hesitated.

“I don’t want charity.”

“It isn’t charity.”

Emily smiled.

“I trust you with my life.”

Mara laughed.

“That’s a dramatic job qualification.”

“Seems accurate.”

Mara accepted.

But their relationship had changed.

Mara was no longer simply an employee.

She became family.

Emily also created a foundation for domestic-abuse survivors.

Its purpose was simple.

Provide emergency housing.

Legal assistance.

Private investigation support.

Financial protection.

And safe transportation for women who needed to disappear quickly.

Emily knew wealth had helped her survive.

Most victims did not have the same resources.

She intended to change that.

Then, one Tuesday morning, Emily felt a sudden contraction.

She froze in the kitchen.

Mara looked up.

“What?”

Emily smiled nervously.

“I think Lily has decided she’s done waiting.”

Another contraction came.

Mara grabbed the hospital bag.

Twenty minutes later, they were speeding toward the hospital.

For once, Emily did not feel afraid of what came next.

She felt ready.
