Chapter 14 - The Queen's GambitVictoria snapped her fingers. One of the mercenaries snatched the heavy black leather briefcase from Evelyn’s trembling hands.

"Check it," Victoria ordered.

The mercenary opened the case, thumbing through the ledgers and blueprints. "It's the real deal, Mrs. Whitmore. Account numbers, offshore transfers, blueprints. Everything."

A cold, victorious smile spread across Victoria’s face. "Excellent."

She walked over to Noah. The twelve-year-old boy looked up at her, defiance warring with terror in his eyes.

"You always were a sickly, useless thing, Noah," Victoria sneered, leaning down to his level. "Daniel's great tragedy. Do you know how hard it was to pretend to care for you? To play the grieving stepmother for the cameras while wishing you had died in that plane with your father?"

"My father was a better person than you will ever be," Noah spat, his voice cracking but resolute.

Victoria’s hand lashed out, slapping the boy across the face with a sharp crack.

Evelyn screamed, lunging forward, but the mercenary holding her slammed the butt of his rifle into her stomach, dropping her to her knees in agonizing pain.

"Quiet, maid," Victoria hissed. She reached down and violently yanked the silver locket from Noah’s neck, snapping the leather cord. She clicked it open, revealing the encrypted SD card.

"The physical documents are one thing," Victoria mused, holding the tiny card up to the light. "But Daniel was thorough. This little piece of plastic could ruin me just as easily. Good thing I have the finest decryption team in the country on payroll."

"You won't get away with this," Evelyn gasped, clutching her ribs. "Charles knows about the decoy. He knows what you did."

Victoria let out a chilling, genuine laugh. It echoed off the steel walls of the vault.

"Charles?" she mocked. "Oh, Evelyn. You really are naive. Who do you think authorized the hit on you tonight? Who do you think ordered Apex Solutions to mobilize?"

Evelyn froze. "No. Charles signed the papers. He gave Noah the trust..."

"Charles gave you paper to buy time," Victoria corrected, her eyes gleaming with malice. "He played you. Did you honestly believe Charles Whitmore would hand over his only heir and twenty-five million dollars to a housekeeper? He despises you. He just needed to know if the real evidence survived the fire."

The betrayal hit Evelyn like a physical blow. The billionaire hadn't been backed into a corner; he had manipulated her into leading his own private army directly to the vault.

"Now that we have the physical documents and the digital backup," Victoria said smoothly, pulling a suppressed pistol from her coat pocket, "Charles and I can finally close this unfortunate chapter of our family history."

She pointed the gun directly at Noah’s chest.

"Goodbye, Noah. Tell your father I won."

"NO!" Evelyn screamed, throwing herself in front of the gun.

But before Victoria could pull the trigger, a mechanized, automated voice echoed from the digital keypad on the vault door.

"WARNING. UNAUTHORIZED REMOVAL OF PRIMARY ASSETS DETECTED. INITIATING PROTOCOL SCORCHED EARTH."
