Chapter 5 - The LeverageSilence fell over the hospital room, thick and suffocating.

Charles Whitmore leaned heavily on his cane, his white eyebrows knitting together in a dangerous scowl. No one spoke to him that way. Billionaires were accustomed to a world that bent to their will, and a housekeeper defying him in a public hospital was an anomaly he could barely process.

"Excuse me?" Charles said, his voice dropping to a terrifyingly quiet register. "Did you just issue an order to me, Miss Brooks?"

"It wasn't an order. It was a fact," Evelyn replied, her chin held high despite the soot and ash streaking her face.

Victoria let out a harsh, mocking laugh. "Charles, she's clearly suffering from smoke inhalation. It's affecting her mind. Security, please remove her. She's upsetting Noah."

The guard reached for Evelyn again, his massive hand closing around her bicep.

Evelyn didn't flinch. Instead, she reached into the deep pocket of her ruined apron. "If your man doesn't let go of me in exactly three seconds, Mr. Whitmore, I am going to walk straight out into the lobby where the press is currently swarming, and I am going to hand them this."

She pulled her hand out of her pocket and held up a heavy, soot-stained object.

It was the brass deadbolt mechanism from Noah’s door. The one she had smashed with the bronze bust.

Victoria’s mocking smile vanished instantly. All the color drained from her perfectly contoured face, leaving her looking pale and hollow.

Charles looked at the piece of metal, confused. "What is that?"

"It's the locking mechanism from Noah's bedroom door," Evelyn said, her eyes locked on Victoria. "A deadbolt. One that can only be locked from the hallway. When I found Noah, this lock was engaged. He was trapped inside."

Charles slowly turned his head to look at his daughter-in-law. "Victoria? What is she talking about?"

"She's lying!" Victoria stammered, taking a step back. "It... the heat must have melted the frame! The door was jammed, Charles. You know how old that house was!"

"It wasn't jammed. It was locked," Evelyn stated firmly. "And the fire investigators will confirm that when they find the splintered door frame. But that's not all." Evelyn took a step closer to the billionaire. "Did she tell you about the wheelchair, Mr. Whitmore? How Noah's wheels were unbolted and removed from the room before the fire started?"

Charles’s grip on his cane tightened until his knuckles turned white. He was a ruthless man, a man who had crushed competitors and ruined lives to build his empire, but he was also a man deeply obsessed with legacy. Noah was his only surviving heir. The boy was disabled, which Charles hated, but he was still a Whitmore.

"Leave us," Charles commanded, his eyes fixed on Victoria.

"Charles, you can't possibly believe this—" Victoria began.

"I said leave us!" Charles roared, his voice shaking the glass of the hospital windows.

The security guards immediately backed out of the room. Victoria stood frozen for a moment, her eyes darting between Evelyn's defiant face and Charles's wrathful expression. With a furious scoff, she spun on her heels and marched out of the room, slamming the door behind her.

Charles turned back to Evelyn. The anger in his eyes had morphed into something cold and calculating.

"Assuming what you say is true," Charles said slowly, "why haven't you gone to the police?"

"Because Victoria wasn't working alone, and you know it," Evelyn bluffed, drawing on the secret Noah had just revealed. "I know about the black box, Mr. Whitmore. I know what Daniel hid behind the fireplace."

Charles physically stumbled back half a step. The mention of the black box hit him harder than the accusation of attempted murder.

"How do you know about that?" he whispered, his voice stripped of its previous arrogance.

"Daniel wasn't an idiot. He knew he was in danger. And he left contingencies," Evelyn lied smoothly, realizing she held all the cards. She didn't know exactly what was in those papers, but she knew it was enough to terrify the most powerful man in Connecticut.

"What do you want?" Charles asked, his tone now strictly business. "Money? Name your price. Five million? Ten?"

"I don't want your bloody money," Evelyn snapped. "I want Noah."

Charles blinked. "You want... the boy?"

"I want legal guardianship," Evelyn demanded, stepping to the foot of Noah's bed. "I want Victoria's parental rights terminated immediately. I want a trust set up for Noah's medical care and education that neither you nor Victoria can touch. And I want it in writing, drawn up by my own lawyers, by tomorrow morning."

"You are insane," Charles scoffed. "No judge will give custody of a billionaire heir to a penniless housekeeper."

"They will when I hand over the deadbolt, the testimony about the wheelchair, and tell the FBI exactly where Victoria took Daniel's black box," Evelyn countered, holding his gaze. "You have lawyers on retainer, Charles. Make it happen. Or the Whitmore legacy burns to the ground tonight, just like your mansion."

Charles stared at her for a long, agonizing minute. He looked at the disabled grandson he barely knew, then at the fierce, soot-covered woman willing to go to war for him.

Finally, Charles gave a single, tight nod. "I will have my attorneys draft the preliminary paperwork." He turned and opened the door, pausing before he left. "You've won the battle, Miss Brooks. But Victoria is not going to let this go. You have no idea what you've just stepped into."

"Tell her to bring it on," Evelyn said.

As the door clicked shut, Evelyn let out a breath she felt she had been holding for an hour. She turned back to Noah. The boy was staring at her with wide, awe-struck eyes.

"Evelyn," he whispered. "You just blackmailed my grandfather."

Evelyn offered him a tired, bruised smile. "Like I said, Noah. I'm not going to let them hurt you anymore. Now, try to get some sleep. Tomorrow, we start fighting back."
