Chapter 15 - Scorched EarthVictoria froze, her pistol wavering. "What is that? What did it say?"

"SEALING VAULT IN 30 SECONDS. INCENDIARY CHARGES PRIMED."
Daniel Whitmore hadn't just built a vault to hide the evidence. He had built a trap. He knew that if his enemies ever found the Blackwood bunker and breached the door, they would try to take the documents. He had rigged the briefcase to a weight-sensor on the steel table. The moment the mercenaries lifted it without engaging an override, the system triggered a fail-safe.
"Scorched Earth?" the lead mercenary panicked, looking at the ceiling. "Ma'am, the walls are rigged with thermite! We need to move, now!"
The heavy steel door of the vault began to slowly, automatically slide shut.
Victoria’s composure shattered. "Leave them! Get the briefcase and get out!"
She turned and sprinted out of the vault, her mercenaries hot on her heels. The man holding Evelyn shoved her to the ground and bolted for the corridor.
"Evelyn! The door!" Noah screamed.
The steel door was closing fast. 20 seconds.
Evelyn scrambled to her feet. She grabbed Noah, hauling him up. "Run! Run, Noah!"
They pushed toward the exit, slipping through the heavy steel door just as the gap narrowed to less than two feet. They spilled out into the concrete corridor.
Down the hall, Elias had managed to slip his zip-ties using a hidden razor blade in his vest. He tackled the last mercenary rushing past him, grabbing the man’s rifle and snapping his neck in one fluid, brutal motion.
"Elias!" Evelyn yelled.
"The stairs! Go!" Elias roared, clutching his bleeding side as he provided cover.
They ran. Above them, the automated voice continued its deadly countdown. "10 SECONDS. 9... 8..."
Victoria and her remaining men had already reached the top of the stairs, disappearing into the rainy night.
Evelyn, Noah, and Elias hit the first step of the stone staircase just as the countdown reached zero.
A blinding flash of white-hot light erupted from the vault behind them. The thermite charges detonated, instantly incinerating everything inside the room at 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The concussive blast blew down the corridor, catching them on the stairs and throwing them violently out of the cellar and into the mud.
Evelyn landed hard, gasping for breath as the rain beat down on her face. A plume of thick, toxic black smoke billowed out of the shattered cellar doors into the stormy sky.
They were alive. They had escaped the blast.
But as Evelyn pushed herself up onto her knees, a horrifying realization washed over her.
"The briefcase," Evelyn choked out, staring at the smoking crater. "Victoria... she got out with the physical documents. And she has the SD card."
Elias groaned, rolling onto his back in the mud, clutching his gunshot wound. "It doesn't matter. The thermite destroyed the vault, but Victoria has everything she needs to wipe her slate clean. She won."
"No," a small voice said.
Evelyn and Elias turned to look at Noah.
The twelve-year-old boy was sitting in the mud, his clothes ruined, his face smeared with dirt. But his eyes were blazing with a brilliant, calculating light.
He reached into the pocket of his soaked pajama pants.
He held up a tiny, black square of plastic. The SD card.
Evelyn gasped. "How..."
"When Victoria slapped me," Noah said, a fierce, triumphant smile breaking through his bruised face. "She dropped the locket for half a second. I palmed the real SD card and swapped it with the memory card from my Nintendo Switch that I kept in my pocket."
Elias stared at the kid, utterly dumbfounded, before throwing his head back and letting out a booming, blood-stained laugh. "I’ll be damned. You really are Daniel’s son."
Noah handed the encrypted card to Evelyn. "Victoria thinks she has the digital backup. But when she tries to decrypt it, all she’s going to find are my save files for The Legend of Zelda. We still have the evidence, Evelyn."
Evelyn took the tiny card, clutching it like a lifeline. The physical papers were gone, yes. But they held the master key to the Whitmore empire's destruction in the palm of her hand.
