CHAPTER 4: THE FALL OF THE WHITMORE NAME

CHAPTER 4: THE FALL OF THE WHITMORE NAME
The investigation began immediately.
Within months, the Whitmore empire started collapsing.
Companies cut ties.
Partners disappeared.
The people who once praised Patricia suddenly pretended they never knew her.
But the hardest part wasn’t watching Patricia lose everything.
It was watching Claire finally understand what she had done.
One evening, she came to my house.
She stood outside the door.
“I want to see Lily.”
I looked at her.
“She misses you.”
I stayed silent.
Claire started crying.
“I was wrong.”
Those words surprised me.
Because for months, I had waited to hear them.
But when they finally came, they didn’t fix anything.
“You chose your mother over your daughter.”
Claire covered her face.
“I thought I was protecting our family.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“You were protecting your mother’s image.”
She looked down.
“I hate myself for that.”
I believed she was sorry.
But forgiveness and trust were different things.
I opened the door.
Lily appeared behind me.
When she saw Claire, she froze.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Lily quietly asked:
“Mommy… did you think I was bad?”
Claire broke down.
“No, baby.”
She fell to her knees.
“I was wrong. You were never bad.”
Lily slowly hugged her.
And that was the moment I realized something.
Children don’t understand pride.
May you like
They don’t understand power.
They only understand love.
