Chapter 10: The Rush

We had barely stepped out of the courthouse, the crisp autumn air hitting my face, when a sudden, sharp pain ripped through my abdomen. I gasped, dropping to my knees on the concrete steps.

"Emily!" My father caught me before I hit the ground.

"It's time," I gasped, clutching my stomach. The stress of the trial, combined with the final release of adrenaline, had pushed my body to its limit. I was going into labor, two weeks early.

The ride to the hospital was a blur of flashing lights and my father’s steady voice telling me to breathe. All the fear I had carried about bringing a child into a nightmare vanished. I was bringing her into the light.
