Chapter 7: The Deposition

Chapter 7: The Deposition

Three weeks later, I sat across a long mahogany table from Ryan for a formal deposition. It was the first time I had seen him since the night my father pulled back the blanket. He looked thinner, his eyes desperate.

"Emily, please," he mouthed silently when the lawyers were distracted. "I love you."

A chill ran down my spine, but the paralyzing fear was gone. I saw him for what he truly was: a weak, pathetic man who only felt strong when he was breaking someone else.

When it was my turn to speak, I looked him dead in the eye and detailed every strike, every threat, and every locked door. I didn't cry. I didn't falter. Ryan stared at the table, realizing that the broken girl he thought he had created had been replaced by a woman he couldn't control.
