Chapter 15 - The Staircase Again.

Evelyn Shaw's face did not change, but her silence lasted too long.
Adrian stood.
"Answer her."
Evelyn placed both hands on the table.
"Five months ago, Victoria asked me when the child-birth review provision would become active."
Claire stared at her.
"And you told her?"
"I gave her a general governance memo."
Adrian's voice rose.
"You gave her the trigger date?"
"I gave the Foundation's executive director information she was entitled to receive about an upcoming audit."
"Without telling me?"
"It was not secret from you."
Claire cut in.
"Was it secret from me?"
Evelyn looked at her.
"The trust is Adrian's family instrument."
Claire felt anger surge.
"My baby triggered the audit."
"Yes."
"My pregnancy became the center of Victoria's scheme."
"Yes."
"And you never thought I should know?"
Evelyn did not hide behind legal language.
"No."
The blunt answer surprised Claire.
Evelyn continued.
"I treated you as someone adjacent to the trust instead of someone directly affected by it."
She looked genuinely ashamed.
"That was wrong."
Adrian paced toward the fireplace.
"Victoria said you'll never admit you gave her the memo."
"I'm admitting it now."
"Did you know what she planned?"
Evelyn's expression hardened.
"Absolutely not."
Collins requested the memo and related correspondence.
Evelyn provided them immediately.
The email exchange showed nothing criminal.
Victoria asked about audit timing.
Evelyn explained the clause.
Victoria asked whether a temporary incapacity of the beneficiary's household would delay review participation.
Evelyn answered that an audit could proceed regardless, but family governance interviews could be rescheduled for legitimate medical reasons.
Claire stared at that question.
"She was planning Hawthorne even then."
Evelyn nodded slowly.
"It appears possible."
Adrian looked at Evelyn with betrayal in his face.
She did not defend her judgment further.
"I gave her information she later misused."
Claire crossed her arms.
"Welcome to the club."
The bitter humor broke the tension just enough for everyone to breathe.
Then Ben entered the library.
"We have a problem."
Victoria Hale was at the front gate.
She was not alone.
Her attorney stood beside her.
So did two board members from the Foundation.
They had come for a scheduled emergency governance meeting that Victoria claimed Adrian had authorized before placing her on leave.
Adrian stared at Ben.
"I authorized no meeting."
Evelyn checked her calendar.
There was, in fact, a meeting notice.
It had been sent from Adrian's Foundation account two weeks earlier.
Another false communication.
The two board members had traveled from out of state.
Victoria's attorney argued that canceling at the gate would look like retaliation.
Evelyn advised allowing the meeting in a controlled conference room because the board members were innocent participants and the notice appeared authentic.
Claire surprised everyone.
"Let her in."
Adrian turned.
"Claire."
"She wants an audience."
Claire looked toward the staircase.
"Give her one."
The meeting was moved to the formal salon beside the foyer.
Security recorded entry and exit.
Detective Collins remained nearby but did not participate in corporate governance.
Victoria entered wearing a burgundy suit and the same calm expression she had worn before the staircase incident.
For one second, Claire's body remembered the push before her mind did.
Her shoulders tightened.
Her palm moved to her stomach.
Victoria noticed.
A faint smile appeared.
Claire hated that smile.
She refused to move away.
The board members sat at a long table.
Victoria's attorney began by arguing that Adrian's suspension of Victoria was procedurally defective.
Evelyn responded that the board had independent authority to place her on leave and had done so.
The discussion became technical.
Claire listened until Victoria finally addressed her directly.
"I hope you're feeling better."
Claire looked at her.
"I feel clear."
Victoria's smile disappeared.
"Good."
"Clear enough to remember you pushing me."
Victoria's attorney objected to the accusation.
Claire ignored him.
"Clear enough to know my doctor never prescribed the pills."
Victoria folded her hands.
"I never claimed to be your doctor."
"No."
Claire's voice remained calm.
"You just made everyone think my doctor agreed with you."
Adrian watched from the opposite side of the table.
He did not interrupt.
Victoria looked at him.
"Adrian, this is exactly why I wanted Claire protected from stress."
Claire almost smiled.
There it was again.
The old move.
Disagreement transformed into instability.
But this time everyone in the room could see it happen in real time.
Claire stood.
"Walk with me."
Victoria frowned.
"Excuse me?"
Claire stepped into the foyer.
The board members followed with their eyes.
Victoria hesitated, then followed because refusing would look weak.
Claire stopped at the base of the grand staircase.
She looked up at the landing where she had nearly fallen.
Then she turned.
"This is where you told me I wasn't allowed downstairs."
Victoria's jaw tightened.
"You were dizzy."
"This is where you touched me."
"I tried to steady you."
"This is where the bottle fell out of your jacket."
Victoria looked toward Adrian.
"You know I was carrying Claire's things because you asked me to manage them."
Adrian answered quietly.
"I asked you to coordinate schedules."
"You signed an authorization."
"Not medication."
Victoria's eyes narrowed.
For the first time, she seemed to realize Adrian's guilt no longer made him easy to control.
Claire took one step closer.
"Why did you call Hawthorne this week?"
Victoria's attorney spoke.
"My client will not answer questions related to an investigation."
Claire nodded.
"That's fine."
She looked at Victoria.
"Then answer one question that isn't about Hawthorne."
Victoria waited.
"Why did you need me afraid of these stairs?"
The question caught her off guard.
"I didn't."
"Yes, you did."
Claire's voice stayed low.
"You needed me upstairs."
"You needed me resting."
"You needed me away from the study, away from meetings, away from the mail, away from Adrian's office."
Victoria's face hardened.
"You are inventing a story because you're embarrassed that you couldn't handle pregnancy without help."
The cruelty was finally naked.
One board member looked at Victoria in shock.
Claire felt Adrian move behind her.
She raised a hand without looking back.
He stopped.
Claire answered for herself.
"I handled pregnancy."
"What I couldn't handle was being lied to by someone my husband trusted."
Victoria laughed once.
"He trusted me because I earned it."
Adrian's voice came from behind Claire.
"You spent it."
Victoria turned toward him.
Something in her composure cracked.
"After everything I did for this family?"
Adrian looked at the staircase.
"You mean everything you decided for this family."
Victoria's eyes flashed.
"Your father understood me."
"My father warned me about you."
That landed.
Victoria's face went pale.
Adrian continued.
"We found Elise's file."
Victoria took one involuntary step backward.
Her heel touched the first stair.
Claire saw fear appear in her eyes.
Not guilt about Elise's death.
Fear of the pattern being known.
Victoria whispered,
"You weren't supposed to find that."
Detective Collins, standing near the salon doorway, heard every word.
So did the board.
So did Victoria's attorney.
Claire looked at the woman who had spent months making her doubt reality.
"No."
Her voice was almost gentle.
"I wasn't supposed to find anything."
Then Ben's phone rang.
He listened for ten seconds.
His face changed.
"Mr. Bennett, the audit team found the secondary account."
May you like
Victoria closed her eyes.
For the first time, she looked defeated before anyone explained why.
