Chapter 5 - A Husband's Doubt.

By nine in the morning, the villa no longer felt like a home.
It felt like a scene being preserved.
Ben restricted access to Victoria's office.
Detective Collins photographed the drawer and removed copies of the forged papers with Evelyn present.
Adrian canceled his meetings.
Claire canceled nothing because Victoria had already canceled half her life for her.
That realization made her angrier than she expected.
She walked into the kitchen and found Ruth Mercer standing beside the sink.
Ruth had worked for the Bennett family for nineteen years.
She was sixty-one, quiet, observant, and almost impossible to rattle.
That morning, her hands trembled around a coffee mug.
"Mrs. Bennett."
Claire stopped.
"You know something."
Ruth looked toward the doorway.
"I should have said it sooner."
Claire's chest tightened.
"Said what?"
Ruth set down the mug.
"Miss Hale changed your bottles."
Claire did not move.
"You saw her?"
"About six weeks ago."
Ruth's voice cracked with embarrassment.
"I thought she was organizing the cabinet."
Claire gripped the counter.
"What exactly did you see?"
"She took the vitamins you bought yourself and put them in her briefcase."
"Then what?"
"She placed another bottle in the same spot."
Claire closed her eyes.
Ruth continued.
"I asked if I should throw away the old one."
"What did she say?"
"She said your doctor had changed brands."
Claire opened her eyes.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Ruth looked ashamed.
"Because later that afternoon Miss Hale said you had become anxious about ordinary things and Adrian wanted the staff to avoid upsetting you."
Claire's anger vanished for one second.
Not because she forgave anyone.
Because she suddenly understood how completely Victoria had isolated her without ever locking a door.
Every person in the house had been taught to interpret Claire's objections as symptoms.
Ruth swallowed.
"I'm sorry."
Claire shook her head.
"Tell Detective Collins."
"I will."
Adrian entered the kitchen just in time to hear the final words.
He looked at Ruth.
"Tell her what?"
Ruth repeated everything.
Adrian's face hardened with every sentence.
When she finished, he thanked her and left the room.
Claire followed.
He stopped in the library and gripped the back of a chair.
"I brought Victoria into this house."
Claire stood near the doorway.
"Yes."
He looked at her.
Her refusal to comfort him surprised him.
"I thought she was helping."
"So did I."
"Claire, I didn't know."
"You knew I was uncomfortable."
He flinched.
"That's different."
"Is it?"
She walked closer.
"How many times did I tell you I felt watched?"
Adrian looked down.
"Several."
"How many times did you tell me Victoria was just organized?"
He said nothing.
"How many times did you tell me pregnancy could make memory strange?"
His jaw tightened.
"I was trying to reassure you."
"You were teaching me not to trust myself."
The words hung between them.
Adrian stepped back as though she had struck him.
Claire's eyes burned, but she refused to cry.
"She did the lying."
Her voice remained steady.
"But you made the lying easier because you trusted efficiency more than you trusted my discomfort."
Adrian sat down.
For once, he had no defense.
Detective Collins entered a minute later.
"I need both of you."
She placed a document on the library table.
It was not from Victoria's drawer.
It came from the Bennett Foundation's electronic archive.
The title read MATERNAL WELLNESS AUTHORIZATION.
Adrian recognized his own signature immediately.
Claire saw his face change.
"What is that?"
Adrian looked trapped.
"I signed it three months ago."
Claire stared at him.
"You signed what?"
He read the page again as though hoping it had changed.
The authorization allowed Victoria to coordinate Claire's transportation, scheduling, nutrition, and "non-clinical wellness support" during Adrian's travel periods.
It did not authorize medication.
It did not authorize impersonation.
But it was broad enough that Victoria could wave it in front of staff and make her control look legitimate.
Claire's voice became very quiet.
"You gave her authority over me without asking me."
"I thought it was administrative."
"You didn't think to tell me?"
"It was after you nearly fainted."
Claire pushed the document toward him.
"The medication schedule started before I nearly fainted."
Adrian's face went still.
Collins watched both of them.
"Mr. Bennett, who prepared this authorization?"
Adrian answered.
"Victoria."
"Who presented it to you?"
"Victoria."
"Who told you Claire had requested help?"
Adrian looked toward Claire.
"Victoria."
Collins nodded slowly.
"And did you verify that request with your wife?"
Adrian's silence was the answer.
Claire turned away.
That was the moment Adrian understood the scale of what Victoria had done.
She had not simply forged Claire's voice.
She had used Adrian's trust to give the forgery power.
Collins placed another sheet on the table.
"There's more."
The page showed a Foundation transfer approved six weeks earlier.
The amount was just under two million dollars.
The recipient was a consulting company called Meridian Health Logistics.
Adrian frowned.
"I've never heard of them."
Collins pointed to the authorization chain.
Victoria initiated it.
Mason approved it.
The service description claimed the money supported a maternal health pilot program.
Claire stared at the words.
"Maternal health."
Collins nodded.
"Your pregnancy may have been used to justify Foundation spending."
Adrian's phone rang.
The screen showed Victoria's name.
Nobody moved.
Collins gestured for him to answer.
Adrian put the call on speaker.
Victoria's voice arrived calm and polished.
"Adrian, I need you to listen before Claire convinces you this is something it isn't."
Claire's expression hardened.
Adrian looked at Collins, then at Claire.
"I'm listening."
Victoria exhaled.
"Your wife signed those papers."
Claire stepped closer to the phone.
"No, I didn't."
Victoria ignored her.
"And Adrian, before you decide I'm the villain, ask Claire what she did during the hour the cameras were off."
Claire froze.
Adrian frowned.
"She was asleep."
Victoria's answer came immediately.
"No."
A brief pause.
"She met Mason."
Claire stared at the speaker.
"That's a lie."
Victoria's voice softened.
"Then ask Mason why he has a recording of her."
The call ended.
Adrian looked at Claire.
For one painful second, doubt returned to his face.
May you like
Claire saw it.
Victoria had found the crack again.
