Chapter 2 - The Label Beneath the Label.

Adrian locked the front doors before anyone could reach them.
He did not ask Victoria's permission.
He did not ask Claire to go upstairs.
That alone told Claire something had changed.
The footsteps above stopped.
Adrian looked toward the security panel beside the foyer archway.
"Ben."
The villa's head of security answered through the wall speaker.
"Yes, sir?"
"Seal the exterior gates."
Victoria's face sharpened.
"Adrian, don't do this."
"Nobody leaves until I know who was upstairs."
Ben's voice returned.
"Understood."
Claire remained seated on the landing while Adrian crouched beside her.
"Any pain?"
"No."
"Cramping?"
"No."
"Are you sure?"
Claire nodded.
"The baby moved."
He exhaled slowly.
Then he looked at the bottle still in his hand.
"Did you take these today?"
"Two this morning because Victoria said my doctor increased the vitamins."
Victoria interrupted.
"That isn't what I said."
Claire turned toward her.
"You handed them to me at breakfast."
"I said the doctor wanted you to stay consistent with your supplements."
"You called them vitamins."
"I didn't prescribe anything."
Adrian stood.
"Stop choosing your words like you're already in court."
Victoria stared at him.
That sentence finally broke through her professional calm.
"I'm trying to protect you."
"From what?"
She looked at Claire.
"From making a decision while you're angry."
Claire almost laughed.
"You pushed me near a staircase."
"I reached for you."
"You pushed me."
Adrian lifted the bottle.
"And this?"
Victoria's silence returned.
Ben Ortiz appeared through the side corridor two minutes later.
He was forty-two, broad shouldered, and rarely surprised by anything inside the Bennett estate.
That night, even he looked unsettled.
"No one crossed the exterior cameras after the gates closed."
Adrian pointed upstairs.
"Someone was in that hallway."
Ben checked the tablet in his hand.
"I'll pull the interior feeds."
Victoria spoke immediately.
"The upstairs cameras were disabled this afternoon because Claire complained about privacy."
Claire felt a chill spread through her arms.
"I never complained about the cameras."
Ben looked at her.
"The request came from your household account."
"I didn't send it."
Victoria rubbed her temple.
"Claire, we discussed this yesterday."
Claire stared at her.
"No, we didn't."
Adrian closed his eyes for one brief second.
Claire knew that expression.
It was the one he wore when two people he trusted gave him incompatible facts.
Victoria saw it too.
She stepped closer.
"This is what I've been trying to tell you."
Claire stood carefully.
"Say it clearly."
Victoria hesitated.
"You've been forgetting conversations."
Claire's anger sharpened her voice.
"Or you've been inventing them."
Ben looked down at his tablet.
"Mr. Bennett, there was a manual override at the north service door twelve minutes before dinner."
Adrian turned.
"From inside or outside?"
"Inside."
"Who used it?"
"The credential belongs to Victoria."
Everyone looked at her.
Victoria's face went pale, but her answer came quickly.
"I let in a courier."
Ben shook his head.
"No courier appears on the gate log."
Adrian took one step toward her.
"Who did you let into my house?"
"Nobody dangerous."
Claire felt the room tighten.
"That's not the same as nobody."
Victoria finally looked away.
Adrian handed the black bottle to Ben.
"Photograph every side of this."
Ben did.
Adrian then placed the bottle inside a clean glass bowl on the console table so no one could claim it had been switched.
Claire noticed how deliberate he was being.
He was already thinking about evidence.
That frightened her more than anger would have.
Adrian turned to her.
"I want your doctor on the phone."
Claire pulled out her phone.
Victoria's hand moved slightly.
Claire noticed.
"What?"
Victoria shook her head.
"Nothing."
Claire called Dr. Naomi Brooks's after-hours line.
Dr. Brooks answered on the third ring.
"Claire?"
Claire put the call on speaker.
"I'm sorry to call this late, but I need you to tell Adrian whether you changed my vitamins this week."
There was a pause.
"I didn't change anything."
Claire looked at Victoria.
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"Doctor, did you prescribe anything new for Claire?"
"Who is this?"
"Adrian Bennett."
"Adrian, I haven't issued a new prescription for Claire in over a month."
The foyer became silent again.
Claire stared at the black bottle.
"Did you send a note recommending household supervision?"
Dr. Brooks went quiet.
"What note?"
Claire's throat tightened.
Adrian looked at her.
"What note?"
She had not told him yet.
Now she had no choice.
"I found pages upstairs with my name on them."
Victoria spoke before Adrian could respond.
"Those were preliminary wellness notes."
Dr. Brooks's voice hardened through the speaker.
"I don't know what you're talking about."
Claire felt vindication and fear arrive at the same time.
Adrian looked at Victoria.
"Where did the notes come from?"
Victoria's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Ben's tablet chimed.
He glanced down.
"Sir, I found the person who used the north door."
He turned the screen around.
A grainy exterior camera image showed a man in a dark coat entering the service corridor.
Claire recognized him immediately.
She had seen him twice at Foundation dinners.
Mason Reed.
The Bennett Foundation's chief financial officer.
Adrian's expression changed.
"Why was Mason in my house?"
Victoria closed her eyes.
"He brought documents."
"What documents?"
"Documents you were not supposed to see tonight."
Adrian's voice dropped.
"That's becoming a theme."
Ben swiped to the next image.
Mason left twenty minutes later carrying a rigid black portfolio.
Claire looked at the time stamp.
He had left less than five minutes before dinner.
"He was the one upstairs."
Victoria said nothing.
Adrian turned toward the study.
"Claire, where are the pages you found?"
"Under the blue cookbook on your desk."
They crossed the foyer together.
The study door was already open.
The blue cookbook lay on the floor.
The desk drawer was pulled out.
The pages were gone.
In their place sat a single white envelope.
Claire did not touch it.
Adrian opened it with the edge of a letter opener.
Inside was a pharmacy receipt.
It carried Claire's name.
It also carried a pickup signature.
May you like
The signature was not Claire's.
It was Victoria's.
