The receptionist’s fingers froze above the keyboard.
“Suite 904… executive corporate reservation…” she repeated, as if the words might change if she said them differently.
My daughter shifted slightly in my arms. I lowered my voice instinctively, keeping her asleep.
“Yes,” I said calmly. “That should be the room.”
The receptionist swallowed hard. “Sir… I think there may have been a misunderstanding—”
“There wasn’t,” I interrupted, still quiet. “There rarely is, until someone looks closer.”
The housekeeper—Maria—stepped back, eyes narrowing slightly as she studied me more carefully now. Not my clothes. Not my roses.
My posture. My control. The way the entire lobby had suddenly stopped breathing around me.
A bellboy whispered something to another staff member. The word didn’t carry—but the panic did.
