Chapter 4: The Room Above the City

Chapter 4: The Room Above the City
Suite 904 was quiet in the way expensive silence always is—carefully designed, carefully controlled.
Maria had been assigned to assist with the room service setup. She moved efficiently, but her eyes kept flicking toward my daughter.
“She looks like her mother,” Maria said softly.
That sentence hit harder than anything in the lobby.
I looked at Lily.
“Yes,” I said.
Maria hesitated. “I’m sorry for earlier… downstairs. Not just me. All of it.”
I nodded once. “You were the only one who didn’t look away from us.”
She didn’t respond. She didn’t need to.
After she left, I placed the roses in a glass vase by the window.
Lily finally woke up.
“Daddy… are we home?”
“Not yet,” I said. “But we’re safe.”
She looked at the city lights.
“Mommy would like this view.”
May you like
My throat tightened—but I smiled anyway.
“She would.”
