The receptionist’s fingers froze above the keyboard. “Suite 904… executive corporate reservation…” she repeated, as if the words might change if she said them differently. My daughter shifted slightly in my arms. I lowered my voice instinctively, keeping her asleep. “Yes,” I said calmly. “That should be the room.”

The general manager stepped out first.

Followed by the assistant director of operations.

And then—someone no one expected to see in the lobby that night.

The receptionist straightened instantly. “Sir! I tried to—there was a system issue—”

He ignored her.

His eyes locked onto me.
