Chapter 2: The Arrival of Authority

Chapter 2: The Arrival of Authority

The general manager stepped out first.

Followed by the assistant director of operations.

And then—someone no one expected to see in the lobby that night.

The regional executive.

The receptionist straightened instantly. “Sir! I tried to—there was a system issue—”

He ignored her.

His eyes locked onto me.

And then, slowly… recognition dawned.

“Mr. Vance…”

The lobby didn’t hear it clearly. But the shift in tone was enough.

Maria blinked. “Mr… Vance?”

The manager stepped forward, voice suddenly careful. “We didn’t know you were arriving tonight. There must be some mistake in the internal notice.”

“There was no mistake,” I replied. “I didn’t announce my arrival.”

The silence that followed was heavier than before.

I gently adjusted my daughter’s head on my shoulder.

“She’s been asleep for four hours,” I said. “Let’s keep it that way.”

The manager nodded quickly. “Of course. We’ll escort you to the suite immediately.”

But I didn’t move.

Not yet.
