CHAPTER 3: THE EVIDENCE

CHAPTER 3: THE EVIDENCE
The police arrived twenty minutes later.
Victoria tried to remain composed.
She failed.
Because I had something she didn't expect.
Security footage.
I had cameras installed throughout the house after a previous break-in.
The nursery camera showed everything.
The slap.
The restraints.
The way she forced Emily onto the bed.
The words she said.
"Forget your pathetic son. He'll die."
The officer watching the footage looked disgusted.
"Mrs. Cole, do you have anything to say?"
Victoria remained silent.
For the first time in years, she had no perfect answer.
Emily was taken to the hospital for her injuries.
My twins refused to leave her side.
Even the doctors noticed.
"They recognize her as their safe person," the pediatrician explained.
I sat beside Emily.
"I am sorry."
She looked away.
"You didn't know."
"But I should have."
She shook her head.
"Victoria was very good at hiding who she was."
I looked at my children.
My family had been built on lies.
But I wasn't going to let those lies continue.
The next morning, I visited Noah.
A small boy with Sarah's eyes looked at me.
"Are you my dad?"
I couldn't speak.
I simply nodded.
And for the first time in eleven years...
I cried.
"I'm sorry I wasn't there."
Noah looked at me quietly.
Then he reached out.
"It's okay."
That broke me.
May you like
Because that child had every reason to hate me.
But he didn't.
