The waiter didn't just knock the bread from the little boy's hand. He struck it so hard the child recoiled... like he'd learned long ago not to react.

The waiter didn't just knock the bread from the little boy's hand.

He struck it so hard the child recoiled...

like he'd learned long ago not to react.

The bread roll skidded across the stone pavement outside the luxury wedding hall.

Every nearby conversation died.

Guests gathered near the service entrance turned in stunned silence.

The little boy never looked at the waiter.

He didn't cry.

He didn't protest.

His eyes stayed fixed on the bread lying in the dirt.

Slowly...

carefully...

he knelt and reached for it.

"I'm sorry..." he whispered, his voice barely louder than a breath.

"I was just... hungry."

Only moments earlier, a woman in a shimmering gold designer gown had been smiling for wedding photographs.

Now she stood motionless.

Unable to take another step.

As the boy reached for the dirty bread, something slipped from the pocket of his torn jacket.

A faded, folded photograph drifted through the air...

and came to rest against the tip of her high heel.

She bent down and picked it up.

At first, her brow tightened in confusion.

Then every trace of color vanished from her face.

"Who... is this?" she asked, her voice suddenly unsteady.

The little boy hugged the bread against his chest, as though the photograph meant even more.

"My mom said..."

"If I ever had nobody left..."

"...I had to find the woman in that picture."

The woman slowly turned the photograph toward herself.

Her hands began to tremble.

It was her.

Years younger.

Holding a baby in her arms.

Her lips parted.

Her breath caught in her throat.

She looked back at the boy...

unable to hide the fear spreading across her face.

"Who gave you this picture?"

May you like

For the first time, the little boy raised his eyes...

and gave the one answer that brought her entire world to a standstill.
