CHAPTER 2: The Truth Beneath the Veil

CHAPTER 2: The Truth Beneath the Veil
That night, the wedding was forgotten.
The guests left in whispers, but Clara didn’t notice.
She had taken the boy—Evan—into a private lounge inside the hotel. The same hotel she had once believed was the safest place in the world.
Now it felt like a locked cage.
Evan sat on the sofa, still holding the bread like it might disappear if he blinked.
Clara stood near the window, shaking.
“You said your mother was gone,” she repeated. “How?”
Evan hesitated.
“She worked for a man. A rich man. He didn’t like that she kept a photo of you.”
Clara froze.
The air shifted.
“She said you were her sister,” Evan continued quietly. “That you were taken away… after the scandal.”
Clara’s memory cracked open.
A younger version of herself. A different life. A sister she had protected… until she couldn’t.
Until powerful people had silenced everything.
“No…” Clara whispered.
But Evan reached into his jacket again and pulled out a second item.
A letter.
Folded. Worn. Hidden.
Clara opened it with shaking hands.
And as she read, her knees gave out.
Because it wasn’t just confirmation.
It was a confession.
Her sister had been alive long enough to give birth to Evan… and long enough to write the name of the man responsible for everything.
The groom’s family.
Her fiancé’s empire.
The same empire she was about to marry into.
From the hallway outside, footsteps approached.
Slow.
May you like
Intentional.
Someone had followed them.
