The boy’s lips trembled.
For a moment, it looked like he might collapse under the weight of the question.
Then he said it.
“Mom said your name was… Elena.”
The woman staggered back as if the air itself had been ripped from her lungs.
Elena.
A name she hadn’t heard spoken aloud in years—since she had changed everything: her identity, her life, her past.
The wedding guests began to whisper, sensing something far beyond scandal. The groom moved forward, confused.
“Clara, what is going on?” he asked sharply.
But Clara didn’t answer.
She couldn’t.
Because the boy in front of her—dirty shoes, torn jacket, trembling hands clutching a stolen piece of bread—had her eyes.
Her features.
A mirror she had spent her entire life trying to erase.
“Where is your mother?” she asked again, softer now.
The boy swallowed hard.
“She’s gone.”
