Chapter 13 - The Invisible Investor

Cassidy ordered a review of every major hostile approach Alder Crown had rejected in the previous five years.

There were dozens.

Private equity funds.

Foreign conglomerates.

Competitors.

Sovereign investors.

One name appeared repeatedly.

Blackridge Consortium.

Three years earlier, Blackridge had offered $18 billion for Alder Crown’s infrastructure division.

Cassidy had refused.

Two years earlier, Blackridge attempted to buy voting shares through intermediaries.

Cassidy blocked them.

One year earlier, Blackridge approached Martin Vale privately about a merger.

Martin had supposedly reported the contact.

Gabriel pulled the archived disclosure.

Cassidy read it.

Martin had reported only one meeting.

Travel data now showed four.

Naomi looked over her shoulder.

“Who controls Blackridge?”

“Publicly?”

Cassidy tapped the screen.

“A group of funds.”

“And privately?”

Cassidy opened an old intelligence report.

One name appeared.

Victor Sloane.

Cassidy knew him.

Everyone in high finance did.

Victor had built a fortune buying distressed companies, replacing their leadership, and selling their most valuable assets.

He had never forgiven Cassidy for refusing him.

Gabriel located additional payments.

Crestwell Clinical Logistics had received money from a Blackridge-linked account.

So had Owen Pike.

So had Martin.

Cassidy stared at the numbers.

“Evelyn was never funding this.”

Naomi nodded.

“She was being funded.”

Cassidy understood the architecture now.

Evelyn wanted the baby.

Brendan wanted money.

Martin wanted revenge and ownership.

Victor Sloane wanted the company.

Each participant had been promised a different reward.

Project Harbor united their greed.

Gabriel’s secure line rang.

Federal agents had stopped Ellis Grant’s aircraft before departure.

Grant had requested immunity.

Cassidy nearly laughed.

“They all become cooperative when the exit closes.”

Grant’s statement arrived hours later.

Victor Sloane had approached him eighteen months earlier.

The original plan had not involved Cassidy’s pregnancy.

They intended to weaken Alder Crown through internal fraud, force a liquidity crisis, then enable Blackridge to acquire key assets.

Everything changed when they discovered Cassidy was pregnant.

A minor heir created a vulnerable succession window.

Evelyn suggested using it.

Victor funded the expanded operation.

Brendan provided personal information.

Martin provided trust access.

Grant arranged logistics.

Dr. Voss designed the medical event.

Owen manipulated systems.

Cassidy asked one question.

“Where is Sloane?”

Gabriel looked grim.

“His jet landed here yesterday.”

Cassidy’s phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

Another photograph appeared.

This time, Cassidy recognized the room.

Her grandfather’s library at the Hale family estate.

Beneath the photograph was one sentence.

COME HOME, CASSIDY.

She stared at the screen.

The Hale estate had been empty for months.

Her grandfather had died six years earlier.

Very few people knew the estate’s security codes.

Then another message arrived.

BRING THE ORIGINAL TRUST KEY.

OR THE NEXT PERSON I INVITE HERE WILL BE YOUR MOTHER.

Cassidy’s face changed.

Her mother lived quietly in Vermont.

She had no involvement in Alder Crown.

No public connection to the company.

Cassidy looked at Gabriel.

“Move a team to my mother immediately.”

He was already calling.

Cassidy looked at the photograph again.

Victor Sloane had made one mistake.

May you like

He thought threatening Cassidy’s family would make her surrender.

Instead, it gave her permission to stop protecting him from destruction.
