Chapter 19 - The Last Move
Gabriel was on his feet instantly.
Smoke appeared beneath the hallway door.
Cassidy grabbed Amelia.
The hospital lights switched to emergency mode.
A voice announced an evacuation.
Gabriel opened the door cautiously.
A security officer ran toward them.
“Fire in the electrical wing.”
Gabriel looked at Cassidy.
“No.”
She understood.
Too convenient.
The fire forced patients into predetermined evacuation corridors.
Exactly the kind of chaos Project Harbor required.
Cassidy held Amelia against her chest.
Gabriel activated his radio.
“Protocol Seven medical extraction.”
The speakers crackled.
No response.
Communications were jammed.
The corridor filled with smoke.
Nurses moved patients toward the stairwell.
Cassidy followed Gabriel toward a restricted service elevator.
It opened.
A man stood inside wearing hospital scrubs.
Cassidy recognized him.
Dr. Malcolm Voss.
He smiled faintly.
“Ms. Hale.”
Gabriel stepped forward.
Voss raised a syringe.
“Stay back.”
Gabriel froze.
Voss looked at Cassidy.
“Give me the child.”
Cassidy tightened her grip.
“No.”
“This has gone far enough.”
“I agree.”
Voss’s hand shook.
“Sloane abandoned us.”
“Of course he did.”
“He promised protection.”
“He promised everybody something.”
Voss looked desperate.
“If I bring him the baby, I have leverage.”
Cassidy stared at him.
“Victor is in federal custody.”
“Not Victor.”
Cassidy’s blood ran cold.
“Who?”
Voss smiled.
“There’s always another buyer.”
Footsteps sounded behind them.
Voss panicked.
He reached for Cassidy.
Gabriel moved.
The syringe fell.
Voss hit the wall.
Federal agents appeared from the smoke-filled corridor.
Within seconds, Voss was restrained.
Cassidy backed away with Amelia.
The fire was contained twenty minutes later.
It had been intentionally started by one of Sloane’s remaining contractors.
The contractor had been promised two million dollars to create an evacuation window.
But Voss’s statement revealed the final truth.
After Sloane realized Project Harbor was collapsing, he had tried to sell the operation to a foreign investment group.
The buyer had offered to finance Voss’s escape if he could secure physical custody of Amelia long enough to challenge the trust.
Cassidy looked at Naomi.
“They still thought my daughter was an asset.”
Naomi nodded.
“Not anymore.”
Cassidy made the decision that night.
The Hale trust would be rewritten.
No guardian would ever receive direct corporate voting authority merely because Amelia was a minor.
Control would pass to an independent fiduciary board until Amelia reached adulthood.
No spouse.
No grandparent.
No temporary guardian.
No opportunist.
Nobody would ever use her child as a corporate key again.
Three months later, federal indictments were announced.
Victor Sloane faced conspiracy, fraud, attempted kidnapping, witness intimidation, and additional financial charges.
Martin Vale pleaded guilty and cooperated.
Ellis Grant accepted a plea agreement.
Owen Pike went to trial.
Dr. Voss lost his medical license and faced criminal prosecution.
Hannah Reed surrendered her license and cooperated with investigators.
Evelyn Mercer refused every deal offered to her.
Brendan accepted responsibility for fraud-related offenses and testified against his mother.
But Cassidy had one final meeting before the case closed.
Evelyn requested to see her.
Cassidy almost refused.
