Chapter 15 - Protocol 7 Was Never Just a Lockdown

Cassidy placed the device on the library table.

Victor reached for it.

“Before you touch that,” Cassidy said, “you should understand Protocol Seven.”

Victor stopped.

“I understand it perfectly.”

“No.”

Cassidy looked toward Evelyn.

“None of you do.”

Evelyn frowned.

Cassidy continued.

“Protocol Seven does not merely freeze accounts.”

She glanced toward Owen.

“It creates a mirrored audit environment.”

Owen’s face changed.

Cassidy saw it.

“Every credential used after activation is duplicated into an isolated forensic server.”

Victor’s hand remained above the device.

“Every login.”

Cassidy continued.

“Every attempted deletion.”

“Every fund transfer.”

“Every external communication.”

Owen suddenly pulled out his phone.

Cassidy looked at him.

“You’re too late.”

His screen went black.

The estate lights flickered.

Victor’s calm expression cracked.

“What did you do?”

“Nothing.”

Cassidy looked toward the wall clock.

“At least not tonight.”

Gabriel had entered the house thirty minutes earlier.

Federal agents were already positioned in the service corridors.

Victor looked toward his security men.

One reached beneath his jacket.

A voice came from the doorway.

“Don’t.”

Gabriel appeared.

Behind him were federal agents.

Weapons remained low but ready.

Victor’s bodyguards raised their hands.

Evelyn backed toward the fireplace.

Owen ran.

He made it through the side door before another agent stopped him.

Brendan collapsed into a chair.

Victor stared at Cassidy.

“You planned this.”

“You invited me.”

“You knew I’d take the bait.”

Cassidy shook her head.

“No.”

“I knew you believed you were smarter than everyone else.”

Federal agents moved toward him.

Victor laughed.

“You think arresting me solves this?”

“It solves tonight.”

“You’ll never prove I authorized the medical operation.”

Cassidy looked toward the antique bookshelf.

A small red light blinked behind a wooden carving.

Victor followed her gaze.

His expression changed.

Cassidy’s grandfather had recorded board negotiations in that room for decades.

Cassidy had restored the system months earlier.

Every word Victor had spoken that evening was recorded.

But the final surprise came from Evelyn.

As an agent approached her, she suddenly grabbed the replica trust key from the table.

“Stay away from me.”

Cassidy stared.

Evelyn backed toward the old fireplace.

“You destroyed my family.”

Brendan looked at her.

“Mom, stop.”

“You chose her.”

“I chose not to go to prison for kidnapping my own child.”

Evelyn’s face twisted.

“That child belongs with us.”

Cassidy stepped forward.

“My daughter belongs to no one.”

Evelyn gripped the device.

Then her eyes moved toward the balcony door.

Gabriel saw it.

“Don’t.”

Evelyn ran.

She reached the balcony.

Her foot slipped on the wet stone.

For one horrifying second, she vanished over the railing.

Gabriel caught her wrist.

Cassidy watched the man Evelyn had tried to destroy save her life.

Agents pulled Evelyn back onto the balcony.

She lay shaking on the floor.

Cassidy stared down at her.

“That is the difference between us.”

Evelyn looked up.

Cassidy’s voice remained steady.

“You were willing to destroy people for control.”

“I never needed to become you to stop you.”

Then Cassidy felt a sharp pain across her abdomen.

She froze.

A second pain came twenty seconds later.

Dr. Reed rushed toward her.

May you like

Cassidy looked down.

Her water had broken.
