Chapter 11: The Inheritance of Ashes
The private jet touched down on the tarmac at Teterboro Airport under a blanket of heavy, gray twilight. I walked down the mobile airstair alone, the cold wind biting sharply through my wool coat. Waiting by the black sedan at the perimeter fence was Admiral Reed, holding a thick manila folder under his arm.
"The Cayman assets have been fully repatriated," the Admiral said as I opened the car door and slid into the leather passenger seat. "Every cent Richard tried to siphon has been frozen and funneled directly into the Leviathan Foundation accounts. The foundation is officially fully funded."
I tossed my travel bag onto the back seat and looked out the window at the distant glittering skyline of Manhattan. "What about Victoria? Has she made any more moves?"
"She's completely unravelling," Reed replied, opening the folder to reveal a series of surveillance photographs. "She abandoned her boutique apartment yesterday and has been camping out at Harrison's old estate in Greenwich. She’s trying to file an emergency injunction to contest the probate dissolution, claiming she was legally defrauded by the federal freeze."
I let out a cold, humorless laugh. "She thinks she can fight the federal government with a civil petition? The probate ruling was built on a forged death certificate. If she pushes that door open any further, the district attorney won't just look at Richard; they'll look straight at her complicity in the cover-up."

"She’s desperate, Evelyn," the Admiral warned, turning his gaze toward me. "Desperate people do irrational things. Watch your back."
"Let her try," I whispered, resting my hand over the faint keloid scars visible at my collar. "I didn't survive a sinking ship to be taken down by a coward in a Greenwich mansion."
