Chapter 1 - The ReckoningThe heavy oak door didn’t just open; it struck the wall with a deafening crack. Owen Bell stood in the threshold, his silhouette carving a sharp, intimidating shadow across the pristine foyer floor. The red glow of the security system blinked rhythmically on the wall panel, a silent witness to the destruction of Celia Voss.

For three seconds, nobody moved. The air in the room grew thick, suffocating.

"Dad!" Mara cried out, her small voice shattering the silence. She scrambled up from the damp tiles, her raw, red knees shaking as she sprinted toward him. Owen dropped to one knee, catching his six-year-old daughter in a fierce embrace. He buried his face in her hair, his eyes never leaving the woman standing in the center of the hall.

Celia’s pristine gray uniform suddenly looked like a prison jumpsuit. The cold, venomous hiss she had weaponized just moments ago dissolved into a pathetic, stammering gasp. "Mr. Bell, I—I can explain. The floor was sticky. She spilled juice. I was just trying to teach her responsibility."

Owen stood up, lifting Mara into his arms. He pressed her face gently into his shoulder so she wouldn't have to look at the monster anymore. "Responsibility," Owen repeated, his voice dangerously low. It wasn't a yell. It was a promise of absolute ruin.

"Yes," Celia said, taking a hesitant step forward, attempting a shaky smile. "You know how children exaggerate. I would never hurt sweet Mara. We were playing a game, weren't we, sweetheart?"

Owen pulled his phone from his pocket with his free hand. He didn’t shout. He didn’t argue. He just tapped the screen. The high-definition audio of Celia’s own voice echoed from the phone speaker: 'He isn't going to see this.'

Celia’s face drained of color. The smug mask of the perfect, highly recommended nanny fractured into pure panic.

"You have exactly two minutes to pack whatever you brought into my house and walk out that door," Owen said, his tone icy. "If you are still on my property when the timer goes off, I will not call the police. I will handle you myself. And then I will hand this footage over to my lawyers, who will ensure you never work, live, or breathe in this state comfortably again."

"You can't do this! I have a contract!" Celia shrieked, the facade completely dropping. Her eyes widened, frantic and feral.

"One minute and forty seconds," Owen said, tapping his watch.

Celia shot a look of pure venom at him, then at the little girl hiding in his neck. She turned on her heel and practically sprinted toward the staff quarters. True to his word, Owen stood perfectly still, timing her. Ninety seconds later, she shoved past him with a duffel bag, pausing just long enough at the front door to look back.

"You think you're so smart, Owen," she whispered, a chilling smile stretching across her face. "But you're not the only one watching."

She slammed the door behind her. Owen locked it, his heart hammering against his ribs, but the real nightmare was only just beginning.
