Chapter 15 - The DescentMarcus didn't need to be told twice. He fired his last three rounds to force the cartel hitters into cover, then sprinted blindly toward Owen's voice. He dove headfirst into the open trapdoor just as the wall behind him was chewed apart by Elena's rifle fire.

Owen jumped in right after him, hitting the button to seal the heavy metal grate above them.

Clang!

Sparks rained down on them as bullets ricocheted off the reinforced steel grate from above. But they were safe. The shaft was impenetrable from the outside.

"Keep moving down," Owen wheezed, flicking on his phone's flashlight. They were in a narrow, vertical service ladder shaft that ran parallel to the elevators. "This drops all the way to the subterranean server farm on level negative-two."

Above them, the muffled sounds of a slaughter echoed from the boardroom. Greg’s final, terrified scream was cut brutally short by a burst of automatic fire.

Owen paused on the ladder for a split second, closing his eyes. The man who had ordered his wife's death was gone. Erased by the very monsters he had invited into their lives. There was no joy in it, only a hollow, heavy exhaustion.

"Keep moving, Owen," Marcus grunted from below. "Elena is a pro. When she realizes she can't shoot through the grate, she's going to use the stairs to cut us off at the bottom."

They climbed down as fast as their burning muscles would allow. Fifty floors. Forty floors. Thirty. The air grew colder and smelled of ozone and copper wire as they descended into the belly of the skyscraper.

By the time they reached the bottom of the shaft, Owen's hands were blistered and bleeding. Marcus kicked out the bottom vent cover, and they tumbled out onto the freezing, epoxy-coated floor of the underground server farm.

Rows upon rows of massive, blinking server racks hummed loudly in the cavernous room, stretching out like an electronic maze.

"The parking garage exit is just past the main cooling units," Owen whispered, pulling the crowbar from his belt.

They moved stealthily through the aisles of servers. But as they turned the final corner toward the exit doors, the massive steel blast-doors hissed shut, locking with a heavy, magnetic thud.

The hum of the servers was suddenly interrupted by a voice over the PA system.

"You know, Owen, I really hate climbing stairs," Elena’s voice echoed through the massive underground room, dripping with malice. She was in the basement security room.

Marcus raised his empty gun, cursing under his breath. "She locked us in."

"I have the ledger, Owen," Elena taunted over the speakers. "I picked it up off the boardroom table after I put a bullet in your traitorous CFO. The cartel has their money, and I'm going to get my bonus. But before I leave, I'm going to turn off the cooling fans to the server farm and lock you in. You'll cook alive in there."

The massive industrial fans that kept the room freezing suddenly whined to a halt. The temperature in the room instantly began to rise.

"But I’m not completely heartless," Elena laughed softly. "I left a little present for you by the exit door. A parting gift."

Owen and Marcus rushed to the locked steel doors. Sitting on the floor in front of them was a familiar, tattered object.

It was Mara’s stuffed grey rabbit, Mr. Hops. The one they had left securely with Marcus's sister hours away.

Owen's heart stopped completely.

"How..." Owen choked out, falling to his knees.

"Did you really think I didn't know where your private investigator's family lived?" Elena’s voice purred. "Enjoy the heat, boys. I have a plane to catch... and a little girl to deliver."
