Chapter 5 - The Inside Man"Stay here," Marcus mouthed, moving silently toward the hallway, his boots making no sound on the hardwood.

Owen gripped his shotgun, his knuckles white. He tracked Marcus’s shadow as the detective slipped around the corner. A beat of silence passed. And then, a sickening thud echoed through the house, followed by the heavy sound of a body hitting the floor.
"Marcus!" Owen yelled, raising his weapon.
Footsteps approached. Slow. Deliberate.
Owen flipped the tactical flashlight on his shotgun, illuminating the archway. Elena "Celia" Rostova stepped into the beam of light. She didn't look like a nanny anymore. She wore a tactical vest, her hair pulled tightly back, holding a suppressed pistol. Marcus was slumped on the floor behind her, out cold.
"Put it down, Owen," Elena said, her voice completely devoid of the warmth she had faked for six months. "You’re a tech CEO, not a soldier. The safety on your shotgun is still engaged."
Owen’s thumb instinctively checked the safety—it was off, she was bluffing—but the momentary distraction was all she needed. Elena fired a shot that shattered the vase next to his head. Owen ducked, scrambling behind the heavy oak kitchen island.
"What do you want?!" Owen screamed over the ringing in his ears.
"Sarah took something that didn't belong to her," Elena said, pacing slowly around the kitchen, her boots crunching on shattered porcelain. "She found the ledger. She knew Vanguard Data was being used to launder money for the cartel. We tore her car apart, but she didn't have it."
"Launder money?" Owen yelled back. "You're insane! I built Vanguard from the ground up!"
"Oh, Owen. Poor, naive Owen," Elena laughed softly. "You built the software. But who provided your series A funding? Who introduced you to your largest offshore clients?"
Owen’s blood ran cold. Greg. His best friend. His CFO.
"Greg wouldn't," Owen whispered to himself, though the pieces were suddenly slotting together with horrifying clarity. Greg had introduced him to the nanny agency. Greg had insisted on upgrading the company's encryption—encryption that he controlled.
"Greg is the one who hired me," Elena confirmed, stopping just on the other side of the island. "He ordered the hit on Sarah when she started asking questions. And when we couldn't find the ledger, he put me in your house to tear it apart from the inside. The abuse? Just a perk. I never liked kids."
Rage, pure and blinding, eclipsed Owen’s fear. He wasn't just fighting for his life; he was fighting the ghosts of his wife's murder and the betrayal of his closest friend.
"You think you cornered me in my own house," Owen said, his voice eerily calm. He reached up, his hand hovering over a small, hidden button under the kitchen counter—the manual override for the security system's countermeasures, designed for home invasions.
"I have the gun, Owen," Elena sneered, raising her weapon to aim over the counter. "It's over."
"No," Owen said, pressing the button. "It's a trap."
Steel shutters violently slammed down over every window and door in the house, sealing them inside. The emergency strobe lights began to flash blindingly in the darkness, and the ear-piercing shriek of the 120-decibel alarm shattered the air.
