Chapter 2: The Reckoning

"Richard, let me explain," Eleanor pleaded, taking a cautious step toward me. Her hands fluttered nervously, and her eyes darted toward Maya, who buried her face deep into my wet collar, trembling violently. The child’s fingers gripped my lapels with a white-knuckled desperation.

"Don't take another step," I warned. The absolute venom in my voice made Eleanor freeze in her tracks. The air between us felt like a physical wall of ice.

"She was just acting out," Eleanor lied smoothly, trying desperately to regain her composure and adopt her usual maternal facade. "Maya threw a terrible tantrum during dinner preparation. She was trying to ruin the evening. I put her in the kitchen to cool down. You know how difficult children can be, darling. They need boundaries."

"I heard everything," I said.

The remaining color completely abandoned Eleanor’s face. Her mouth opened, but no sound came out. The elegant hostess was gone, replaced by a cornered predator realizing it had stepped into a trap.

"I heard you tell my daughter she was a leftover. I heard you forbid her from stepping on the Persian rug because she was 'too dirty'. I saw her cowering in the dark with a bowl of cold, plain noodles while you fed strangers my food, with my money, in my house."

I turned toward the hallway, holding Maya tighter against my chest, shielding her from the woman standing across the room. "You have exactly one hour to pack whatever fits in your designer suitcases. Do not touch anything that belonged to Sarah. If you are still in this house when I return, I am calling the police and having you arrested for child endangerment."

"Where are you going?" she cried out, her composed mask shattering into ugly, raw desperation. "Richard, please, we can talk about this!"

"To the hospital," I replied, not looking back as I headed for the door. "And then, Eleanor, I am going to completely destroy you."
