Dr. Evans, an older pediatrician with kind eyes, silver hair, and a deeply serious demeanor, pulled me into the hallway after finishing Maya's bloodwork and physical exam. The door clicked shut behind us, isolating us from the beeping monitors inside.
"Mr. Sterling, I’ll be blunt. I don't sugarcoat things when it comes to children," the doctor said, crossing his arms over his white coat. "Maya is suffering from severe malnutrition, vitamin deficiencies, and chronic dehydration. Her body mass index is dangerously low for a nine-year-old. The fainting spell today wasn't a fluke; it was her body simply giving out from exhaustion and a severe lack of basic, sustaining calories."
I pressed the palms of my hands against my eyes, trying to keep the tears from falling. The weight of his words felt like physical blows to my stomach.
"There's more," Dr. Evans continued quietly, his voice lowering to a professional whisper. "She shows chronically elevated cortisol levels consistent with severe, prolonged psychological stress. She flinched violently when my nurses tried to take her blood pressure, as if she expected to be struck. Has there been a change in her home environment recently? A new caregiver? A trauma?"
"My wife," I choked out, the words tasting like ash in my mouth. "My new wife. I travel constantly for work. I thought... God, I thought she was taking care of her."

The doctor’s expression hardened into professional steel. "I see. We are going to keep Maya overnight on an IV drip to stabilize her fluids, replenish her electrolytes, and monitor her blood sugar. But Mr. Sterling, as a medical professional, I am legally mandated to report suspected child abuse and neglect to the authorities."
"Report it," I said instantly, dropping my hands and locking eyes with him. "Document every single detail. Take photos of her condition. Build a comprehensive medical file. I need all the evidence you have to ensure this woman never comes near her again."
