Chapter 14: The Echoes of Betrayal

Chapter 14: The Echoes of Betrayal
The Gulfstream touched down on the private airstrip outside New York just as dawn began to bleed a cold, steel-grey light across the horizon. The exhaustion of international travel and continuous strategic maneuvers pulled heavily at Elena’s shoulders, but her focus remained as sharp as shattered glass.
As the aircraft door opened, Marcus stepped up with a secure encrypted tablet already glowing in his hand.
"Miss Vance, we intercepted a high-frequency data burst routed through a dark-web proxy server originating from a secure terminal in Zurich just twenty minutes before we landed," Marcus reported, his voice low and urgent as Elena descended the stairs onto the tarmac. "It wasn't corporate espionage. It was an internal registry ping."
Elena stopped midway down the mobile staircase, the cold wind catching the hem of her cashmere coat. "An internal registry ping from where?"
"From our own compliance database," Marcus answered, his expression grim. "Someone inside the inner circle just accessed the locked archives detailing the original ownership transfer of your father’s estate—specifically, the pre-merger asset deeds that predate the federal seizure."
Elena’s eyes narrowed. The encrypted message she received mid-flight hadn't been an empty threat. Someone close to her—someone who had survived the purge of the board and earned her trust—was actively digging into the one archive she thought had been permanently buried.
"Who has level-four clearance to that specific server, Marcus?" Elena asked, her voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper.

"Only two people besides you," Marcus replied evenly. "Liam Vance... and your lead financial auditor, David Vance."
Elena looked out across the misty tarmac, a cold realization settling deep into her bones. The cleanup wasn't finished. The shadows were shifting closer to home.
