Chapter 15: The Audit Trail

The executive suite on the forty-fifth floor of Vance Global Tower was deathly quiet. The morning sun cast long, angular shadows across the minimalist obsidian desk where Elena sat, reviewing the system access logs Marcus had pulled from the mainframe.

The digital footprint was undeniably clear. At 3:14 AM Zurich time, while the Gulfstream was cruising over the Atlantic, a master encryption key belonging to David Vance had been used to download the original Blackwood estate deeds—documents that outlined a secret secondary trust fund completely separate from the corporate assets seized by the federal government.

A sharp knock rapped against the heavy walnut door.

"Enter," Elena commanded, her voice like a blade being drawn from its scabbard.

The door clicked open, and David Vance stepped into the office. He looked impeccably tailored in a bespoke grey suit, his silver-rimmed glasses catching the morning light. But beneath his professional composure, a subtle, nervous tic betrayed the tension in his jaw.

"Good morning, Elena," David said, stepping toward the desk with a practiced, smooth smile. "Marcus told me you requested an urgent review of the asset distribution files. I brought the certified hard copies straight from the compliance vault."

Elena didn't look at the files. She leaned back in her high-backed leather chair, her dark, piercing eyes locked entirely onto the auditor's face.

"You didn't just review the files, David," Elena said softly, her tone entirely devoid of warmth. "You downloaded the secondary Blackwood trust registry. The one that was never part of the federal SEC audit, because my father deliberately kept it private to protect it from my uncle's syndicate."

David froze mid-stride, the leather folder slipping an inch in his grip before he quickly regained his composure. He forced a dry chuckle, though it rang hollow in the vast, silent office.

"Elena, surely you don't suspect—I'm your lead auditor. I spent six months helping you unearth your uncle's embezzlement," David protested, stepping closer to the desk. "Accessing those files is part of verifying the final asset clearance for the estate."

"My uncle didn't know about that trust fund, David," Elena interrupted, standing up slowly from her chair. She walked around the desk, her heels clicking rhythmically against the floor until she stood just feet away from him. "Beatrice didn't know about it. Only my father, my lawyer... and the auditor who helped set up the offshore proxy accounts three years ago."

She stared straight into his eyes, the trap snapping shut with absolute, terrifying precision.

"So tell me, David. Who are you really working for? Marcus Thorne? Or are you just hoping to salvage what my family left behind?"
