Chapter 17: The Phantom Architect

The private conference room on the fifty-second floor of Vance Global Tower was completely dark, save for the pale, ghostly glow of three massive monitors mounted against the concrete wall. Elena stood before them alone, her arms crossed over her tailored blazer, her eyes tracking a complex web of shell-company transactions that spanned from Zurich to the Cayman Islands.

David Vance’s arrest had neutralized the immediate internal threat, but the forensic trace he left behind had uncovered something far more sinister. The encrypted dark-web proxy ping hadn't originated from a rogue employee; it was a digital ghost signature.

A sharp, rhythmic knock sounded at the door, and Marcus stepped inside, sliding a decrypted hard drive onto the central glass table.

"We ran a deep-level heuristic trace on David’s encrypted communication logs, Miss Vance," Marcus reported, his voice tight with tension. "The funds he was promised weren't coming from Marcus Thorne’s venture capital firm. Thorne was just a front."

Elena didn't turn away from the monitors. "Who is behind the proxy?"

"The routing traces point directly to an offshore trust registered under a legacy subsidiary of Vance Global," Marcus said, pausing for a fraction of a second. "A subsidiary that was legally dissolved twenty years ago... under your grandfather’s direct signature."

Elena’s eyes narrowed as a cold realization clicked into place. Someone from the older generation—someone everyone believed was buried beneath decades of corporate restructuring and family tragedy—had survived the purge. And they had been pulling the strings all along.
