Chapter 16: The Confession in the Glass

Chapter 16: The Confession in the Glass
David’s carefully maintained facade crumbled instantly. The smooth smile vanished, replaced by a desperate, panicked edge as he realized there was no escape from the mathematical certainty of her logic.
"Thorne has deep pockets, Elena," David whispered, his voice pitching upward as he took a half-step backward toward the closed door. "You tore down an entire corporate ecosystem in weeks. You think international venture capitalists are going to sit back and let a twenty-eight-year-old girl hold absolute monopoly over global shipping and commodities? They want stability, and stability means removing the wildcard."
"A wildcard," Elena repeated, a cold, humorless smile touching the corners of her lips. She didn't raise her voice, but every word carried the weight of an executioner's axe. "You thought I was vulnerable because I was focused on my family's enemies. You forgot that I built this fortress out of the very ashes you’re trying to burn."
Before David could lunge toward the door, Marcus Vance stepped out from the private alcove near the floor-to-ceiling windows, blocking the exit with absolute, unyielding solidity. Simultaneously, the heavy oak doors swung open, and two federal marshals stepped into the room, their badges gleaming under the minimalist pendant lights.
"David Vance," Marcus stated coldly, pulling a pair of steel cuffs from his belt as he advanced on the trembling auditor. "You are under arrest for corporate espionage, insider conspiracy, and violation of federal securities secrecy acts."
David struggled briefly as the cuffs snapped securely around his wrists, his eyes darting frantically toward Elena one last time. "You can't control everything, Elena! The board, the markets, the shadows—they'll come for you eventually!"
"Let them come," Elena murmured, turning her back to him as Marcus led the frantic auditor out of the office.

The heavy doors clicked shut, plunging the penthouse suite back into profound, unbroken silence. Elena walked slowly back to the floor-to-ceiling glass, looking out over the glittering expanse of the city below. The second betrayal had been exposed, rooted out, and crushed before it could take hold.
She reached out, resting her hand coolly against the glass. The horizon was clear, the empire was secure, and the new sovereign stood completely alone at the summit—untouchable, unyielding, and absolute.
