Chapter 17 - The Founders' Gala

Charlotte entered the Solmere ballroom at 10:43 p.m.
More than five hundred guests filled the room.
Crystal chandeliers glowed overhead.
A live orchestra played near the stage.
Waiters carried champagne.
It looked elegant.
Normal.
Dangerously normal.
Daniel's team quietly searched the building.
Alexander remained near the security office.
Charlotte walked onto the stage.
The orchestra stopped.
Guests began whispering.
Only days earlier, most had seen her bleeding on the lobby floor.
Now she stood before them as owner.
"My name is Charlotte Vale."
The room went silent.
"This hotel has belonged to my family for generations."
She paused.
"But ownership does not make a family honorable."
Several board members exchanged glances.
Charlotte continued.
"Over the past six months, I learned that people inside Solmere committed fraud, bribery, blackmail, and murder."
Gasps spread.
"And I learned something else."
"My family also built its power through decisions that hurt people."
Alexander watched from the back of the room.
Charlotte's voice remained steady.
"I won't defend what deserves to be exposed."
A slow clap came from the balcony.
Marcus Reed stepped into view.
The guests turned.
Marcus wore a black tuxedo.
"You finally understand."
Charlotte looked up.
"Come down."
Marcus smiled.
"No."
Daniel's team moved toward the stairs.
Marcus held up a small device.
"Nobody moves."
The ballroom froze.
Charlotte saw the button beneath his thumb.
A detonator.
Marcus spoke.
"My grandfather owned the land where this hotel stands."
"Samuel Vale destroyed him."
"Your family turned his ruin into a legend."
Charlotte remained calm.
"If that's true, release the records."
"I intend to."
Screens around the ballroom turned on.
Old documents appeared.
Foreclosure papers.
Bank transfers.
Letters.
Charlotte saw her grandfather's signature.
Marcus wasn't lying.
The Vale family had used political influence to acquire the original property for almost nothing.
Guests began whispering.
Marcus smiled.
"Now the world sees you."
Charlotte nodded.
"Good."
His smile disappeared.
"What?"
"Publish all of it."
Marcus stared at her.
"I won't stop you."
"You think this is a trick?"
"No."
Charlotte stepped closer to the balcony.
"If my family did this, people deserve to know."
Marcus looked confused.
He had spent decades preparing for denial.
For arrogance.
For a Vale defending the empire.
Charlotte gave him none of it.
"But you're still responsible for my mother's death."
Marcus' face hardened.
"And Samuel's shooting."
"Victor's crimes."
"The attempts on my life."
"You don't get justice by becoming worse than the people you hate."
Marcus raised the detonator.
"Justice?"
He laughed.
"I stopped believing in justice years ago."
Daniel's voice came through Charlotte's hidden earpiece.
Bombs confirmed.
Four devices.
Foundation level.
Charlotte kept her eyes on Marcus.
"Then why haven't you pressed the button?"
Marcus said nothing.
Charlotte understood.
He wanted acknowledgment.
Not death.
He wanted the Vale name humiliated.
She stepped off the stage.
"Everyone deserves to hear the truth."
Then the ballroom doors opened.
Samuel entered.
His injured arm rested in a sling.
Marcus went pale.
Samuel looked up at him.
"Your father didn't lose the hotel to Samuel Vale."
Marcus stared.
Samuel raised an old document.
"He sold it willingly."
Marcus' hand began shaking.
"No."
May you like
Samuel continued.
"And I have his original letter."
