Chapter 5 - Eleanor Vale's Last Secret

Samuel led Charlotte through an underground service tunnel beneath the Solmere.

The tunnel connected the hotel to an old storage building across the street.

Eleanor had commissioned it decades earlier for emergency evacuations.

Only a handful of senior employees knew it existed.

Samuel locked the steel door behind them.

Charlotte leaned against the wall.

"Tell me everything."

Samuel looked exhausted.

He seemed older than he had only hours earlier.

"Your mother discovered Adrian's theft almost a year ago."

"Why didn't she call the police?"

"Because it wasn't only theft."

Samuel opened the black notebook.

Inside were handwritten dates and initials.

Judges.

Politicians.

Bank executives.

Real-estate developers.

Charlotte recognized several names.

"What is this?"

"Payments."

"Bribes?"

Samuel nodded.

"Adrian built a network using Solmere money."

Charlotte turned the pages.

"Marcus?"

"Bought years ago."

"Celeste?"

"Useful because of her connections."

Charlotte stopped at one set of initials.

VH.

"Who is VH?"

Samuel looked away.

"Victor Hale."

Charlotte froze.

Victor Hale had been Eleanor's personal attorney.

He had overseen the Vale family trust.

More importantly, he controlled the legal transfer of ownership after Eleanor's death.

"If Victor is involved, then my inheritance documents are compromised."

"That's why your mother hid the real documents."

"Where?"

Samuel pointed to a coded sequence in the notebook.

"She never told me directly."

Charlotte examined it.

Numbers.

Hotel names.

Dates.

Room numbers.

Then she understood.

"They're coordinates."

Samuel smiled faintly.

"Your mother always said you were faster than everyone expected."

Charlotte copied the numbers onto her phone.

The coordinates pointed toward an abandoned Vale property north of the city.

An old lakeside estate.

Charlotte remembered it.

Her parents had stopped using it after her father died.

"What's there?"

Samuel answered quietly.

"The black ledger."

A loud bang echoed behind them.

Both turned.

Someone was hitting the steel door.

Samuel's face changed.

"They found the tunnel."

Charlotte grabbed his arm.

"Come with me."

They ran toward the far staircase.

Another bang.

Then another.

The door began bending inward.

Charlotte reached the street exit first.

Samuel stopped behind her.

"Charlotte."

She looked back.

He handed her the notebook.

"Your mother told me something before she died."

"What?"

"She said the empire wasn't worth saving if saving it turned you into them."

Charlotte swallowed.

Samuel smiled sadly.

"Remember that."

The steel door burst open.

Samuel shoved Charlotte toward the stairs.

"Go!"

"I'm not leaving you."

"Go!"

Charlotte heard footsteps approaching.

Samuel pulled a fire alarm.

Sirens erupted throughout the building.

Charlotte hesitated.

Then she ran.

She emerged into an alley filled with flashing emergency lights.

Behind her, she heard shouting.

Then a single gunshot.

Charlotte stopped.

Her entire body went numb.

She turned toward the door.

Smoke began pouring from the basement entrance.

"Samuel!"

No answer.

She tried to run back.

A firefighter grabbed her.

"You can't go inside."

"There's someone down there!"

More firefighters rushed past.

Charlotte stared at the smoke.

Her phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

ONE VALE LOYALIST DOWN.

HOW MANY MORE ARE YOU WILLING TO LOSE?

Charlotte looked back at the burning building.

May you like

Then she typed three words.

I'm not leaving.
