Chapter 19 - Nineteen Minutes Until Midnight

Daniel evacuated the ballroom.
Bomb technicians flooded the basement.
Charlotte remained inside the hotel.
Victor was somewhere in the building.
And he knew exactly what midnight meant.
Under the original Vale trust, Charlotte's ownership was protected until age twenty-eight by temporary legal provisions.
Before midnight, a successful death claim could shift assets into secondary trusts.
After midnight, Solmere became permanently hers.
Victor had nineteen minutes to kill her.
Charlotte looked at Daniel.
"Where would he go?"
"Somewhere with access to exits."
Alexander shook his head.
"No."
"He'll go where this started."
Charlotte understood.
Suite 1704.
They rushed upstairs.
At 11:48, Charlotte entered the hidden corridor.
The suite door stood open.
Victor waited beside the window.
He held a gun against Celeste Harrington's head.
Charlotte stopped.
Celeste's face was bruised.
Her hands were tied.
Victor smiled.
"Perfect."
Daniel raised his weapon.
Victor pressed the gun harder against Celeste.
"Lower it."
Daniel obeyed.
Charlotte looked at Celeste.
The woman who had dragged her across the lobby days earlier now trembled helplessly.
"I'm sorry," Celeste whispered.
Victor laughed.
"Touching."
Charlotte looked at him.
"What do you want?"
"Sign."
A contract rested on the desk.
Charlotte read the first line.
Transfer of controlling interest.
"Even if I sign, it won't hold."
"It only needs to hold for twelve minutes."
"And then?"
Victor smiled.
"Then you suffer an unfortunate accident."
Celeste began crying.
Victor shoved her toward the floor.
"Sign."
Charlotte picked up the pen.
11:52.
Daniel stared at her.
Charlotte signed.
Victor laughed.
"Your mother was always too stubborn."
Charlotte set down the pen.
"There's one problem."
"What?"
"That's not my legal signature."
Victor's smile disappeared.
Charlotte stepped backward.
"My full legal name is Charlotte Eleanor Miriam Vale."
"The trust requires all four names."
Victor looked at the contract.
Only Charlotte Vale was written.
11:55.
Victor raised the gun.
"You think you're clever."
Charlotte looked toward the camera above him.
"I think you talk too much."
Victor followed her eyes.
The camera light blinked red.
Everything was being broadcast.
Not only to police.
To the ballroom.
To reporters outside.
To thousands watching the hotel's emergency media stream.
Victor's face changed.
He fired at the camera.
Daniel lunged.
The gunshot struck the wall.
Celeste screamed.
Charlotte tackled her behind the desk.
Daniel and Victor crashed against the window.
Glass fractured.
Victor grabbed Daniel's throat.
Charlotte saw the gun near her hand.
She picked it up.
Victor froze.
"Put it down."
Charlotte aimed.
Victor smiled.
"You aren't a killer."
Charlotte's hands trembled.
He was right.
She lowered the gun.
Victor laughed.
Then Celeste grabbed a heavy crystal lamp and struck him from behind.
Victor collapsed.
Daniel immediately cuffed him.
Celeste dropped the lamp.
Charlotte stared at her.
Celeste wiped tears from her face.
"I owed you one."
Sirens filled the street below.
Charlotte looked at the clock.
11:59.
Alexander entered.
Samuel followed.
Thirty seconds.
Twenty.
Ten.
Charlotte stood beside the broken window.
Midnight arrived.
Her twenty-eighth birthday began.
Nothing dramatic happened.
No explosion.
No music.
No applause.
Just one quiet second passing into another.
Yet in that moment, Victor Hale lost the last legal path to the Vale empire.
Charlotte looked around Suite 1704.
The room where they had collected documents to erase her identity had become the place where she finally secured it.
Daniel smiled.
"Happy birthday."
May you like
Charlotte looked toward the lights of Manhattan.
"Now we rebuild."
