Chapter 8 - The Return of Charlotte Vale

At 11:47 p.m., the Solmere lobby was quieter than usual.
Celeste Harrington sat inside the private lounge drinking champagne.
Marcus stood near reception.
Adrian waited upstairs.
They expected a frightened young woman.
Instead, three black vehicles stopped outside the hotel.
Daniel Mercer stepped out first.
Behind him came two former federal investigators he trusted.
Then Charlotte emerged.
She wasn't wearing expensive jewelry.
She wasn't wearing a designer gown.
She wore a simple black suit.
The bruise remained visible on her face.
She wanted it visible.
Marcus saw her through the glass doors.
His face drained of color.
Charlotte entered.
The lobby grew silent again.
Some guests recognized her from the viral video.
A few pulled out phones.
Celeste rose from the lounge.
"What is she doing here?"
Charlotte stopped beneath the chandelier.
"Looking for Samuel."
Celeste laughed nervously.
"Security."
Nobody moved.
Charlotte looked toward the security guards.
"My name is Charlotte Eleanor Vale."
Whispers spread.
Celeste rolled her eyes.
"This is ridiculous."
Daniel stepped forward.
"Charlotte Vale is the majority owner of Solmere Holdings."
The lobby erupted.
Marcus moved backward.
Celeste stared at Charlotte.
"No."
Charlotte took another step.
"You dragged me across my own lobby."
Celeste's champagne glass slipped from her hand.
It shattered.
Charlotte didn't look away.
"You called me trash."
Celeste's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
"You told me people like me didn't belong here."
Charlotte gestured toward the marble beneath them.
"My grandfather chose this stone."
"My father designed those elevators."
"My mother selected every chandelier in this room."
"And legally, I own the floor you dragged me across."
Guests began recording.
Celeste looked toward Marcus for help.
Marcus was already walking toward the back offices.
Daniel signaled the investigators.
They followed him.
Charlotte approached Celeste.
"Where is Samuel?"
"I don't know who you're talking about."
Charlotte leaned closer.
"Wrong answer."
Suddenly, the lobby elevators opened.
Adrian Cross stepped out.
Perfect suit.
Perfect posture.
No fear.
He applauded slowly.
"Very dramatic."
Charlotte faced him.
"Where is Samuel?"
"Safe."
"Release him."
Adrian smiled.
"Give me the ledger."
Charlotte's expression remained calm.
"What ledger?"
For the first time, Adrian looked uncertain.
Charlotte smiled.
"You really thought I'd bring it here?"
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
Charlotte continued.
"Copies were sent to six separate locations before I walked through those doors."
It was a bluff.
But Adrian didn't know that.
His face changed.
Then police sirens became audible outside.
Adrian glanced toward the entrance.
Charlotte saw fear.
Only for a second.
Then every door in the hotel locked.
The lights went out.
Guests screamed.
A voice came over the speakers.
Marcus.
"Nobody leaves."
Emergency lights turned red.
Adrian looked toward Charlotte.
Then he whispered.
"You should never have come home."
A gunshot echoed from the seventeenth floor.
Charlotte's face went pale.
May you like
Samuel was still somewhere inside the building.
And the hotel she legally owned had just become a prison.
