Chapter 10: The Trial Begins

Chapter 10: The Trial Begins

The Cook County Courthouse was a towering structure of limestone and authority.

Walking up the massive front steps, I held Sophie’s hand. The stitches were gone, replaced by a thin, pale pink scar near her hairline. She squeezed my hand tightly as we passed the barrage of reporters and flashing cameras.

“Keep your head down, sweetie,” I whispered.

Inside the courtroom, the air was tense.

Preston sat at the defense table. He looked terrified. The reality of a potential ten-year prison sentence had finally crushed his ego. My parents sat in the gallery behind him, looking like shadows of their former selves.

DA Jenkins stood up for her opening statement.

She didn't pace. She didn't shout. She walked directly to the jury box and set down a clear plastic evidence bag.

Inside the bag was Sophie’s little white flower-girl dress. The collar was stained with dark, dried blood.

Several jurors gasped.

“This case is not about a mistake,” Jenkins told the jury, her voice ringing clear in the silent room. “This case is about a grown man who wielded his power, his privilege, and a solid oak board to punish an eight-year-old child. A man who manufactured a crime to humiliate his family, and then resorted to brutal violence when he was caught.”

Preston’s defense lawyer tried his best. He painted Preston as a stressed groom. He talked about the pressure of the wedding, the anxiety, the heavy champagne consumption.

But it all sounded hollow.

Because sitting just a few feet away was a little girl with a scar on her forehead, who had done absolutely nothing wrong.
