Chapter 13: The Verdict

Chapter 13: The Verdict

We didn't have to wait long.

Three hours later, the bailiff called us back into the courtroom. Juries usually took days to deliberate on felony charges. Three hours meant there was zero disagreement in that room.

The foreman, the man in the flannel shirt, stood up. He held a slip of paper.

Preston was forced to stand. His knees were shaking so badly I could see the fabric of his trousers trembling.

“Has the jury reached a verdict?” the judge asked.

“We have, Your Honor,” the foreman said firmly.

“On the charge of Filing a False Police Report, how do you find?”

“Guilty.”

“On the charge of Child Endangerment, how do you find?”

“Guilty.”

“On the charge of Aggravated Battery of a Child with a Deadly Weapon, how do you find?”

“Guilty.”

Preston collapsed into his chair. He buried his face in his hands and finally, loudly, began to sob.

From the gallery behind him, my mother let out a sharp, agonizing wail. It was the sound of a woman watching her entire universe collapse.

I didn't smile. I didn't cheer. I just let out a long, slow breath. The heavy, suffocating weight I had carried on my chest for thirty years finally lifted.

The judge banged his gavel.

“The defendant’s bail is revoked. He will be remanded to the custody of the county jail pending sentencing.”

Two massive bailiffs approached Preston. They didn't care about his expensive suit. They didn't care about his last name. They grabbed his arms, pulled them behind his back, and the harsh click of handcuffs echoed through the silent courtroom.

He looked back at me one last time as they led him through the side door.

I didn't look away. I watched the door close behind him.
