The article cited "anonymous sources close to the family." It claimed I had always been intensely jealous of Preston’s success. It insinuated that I had trained Sophie to steal the phone to embarrass him, and that the ensuing accident was just a tragedy I was exploiting for money.

I read the article on my phone in the school parking lot. My blood boiled.

Sophie climbed into the backseat, her backpack heavy. She still wore a bandage over her stitches.

“Mommy, why did Tommy’s mom tell him he couldn't play with me anymore?” she asked, her voice small and confused.

I closed my eyes. The cruelty of adults was spilling over onto an eight-year-old.

“Tommy’s mom is just confused right now, baby,” I said, forcing a smile.

I drove straight to Marcus’s office. I threw my phone on his desk.

“Look at this. They’re destroying my daughter's reputation. She’s eight years old!”

Marcus read the article. He didn't look angry. He looked predatory.

“Your mother planted this,” he said.

“Of course she did. Can we sue them for defamation?”

“We could,” Marcus said, leaning forward. “Or we could just fight fire with fire. The DA has been hesitant to release the tape to the public because it involves a minor. But you're the mother. You have the right to waive her privacy.”
