Chapter 7: Going Viral
I sat in the bright, intimidating studio of Channel 5 News.
The anchor, a sharp woman named Diane, sat across from me. The cameras rolled.
“Evelyn, your family claims this is a misunderstanding. They say your brother lost his grip on a heavy object during a chaotic moment,” Diane said, her tone empathetic but probing.
“They are lying,” I said firmly. “My brother deliberately framed my daughter for theft. When I stood up to him, he assaulted her.”
“That is a very serious accusation.”
“It’s not an accusation,” I replied. “It’s a fact. And I have the video to prove it.”
That night, at 6:00 PM, Channel 5 played the footage.
They blurred Sophie’s face to protect her identity, but they didn't blur Preston’s. They showed the deliberate planting of the phone. They showed the violent, calculated swing of the oak board.
The fallout was instantaneous.
By morning, the video was everywhere. It trended on social media. National news outlets picked it up. The blog post my mother had planted was buried under an avalanche of public outrage.
Preston’s real estate firm fired him by noon.
The country club suspended my parents' membership, citing “moral turpitude.”
For thirty years, my parents had carefully constructed a facade of perfection, elegance, and superiority. In less than twenty-four hours, a silent security video had burned it completely to the ground.
