Chapter 1: The Call

Chapter 1: The Call
Ethan’s thumb hovered over the screen of his phone. The silence in the grand foyer was deafening, broken only by the ragged, shallow breaths of his eleven-year-old daughter. Ava remained frozen on the marble floor, the soapy sponge still resting in her small, trembling hands.
Isabella’s aristocratic composure finally slipped. The wine glass in her hand shook slightly, splashing a drop of expensive Pinot Noir onto the pristine rug. "Ethan, don't be dramatic," she scoffed, attempting to mask her sudden panic with a sharp, dismissive tone. "She knocked over a vase. She needed to learn that actions have consequences. You coddle her."
Ethan didn’t look at his wife. His eyes were locked on the red, raw skin of Ava’s knuckles. "She told me you wouldn't be home until next week," Ava had whispered. Those words echoed in his skull, unlocking a horrifying realization: this wasn't a punishment for a broken vase. This was the reality of his daughter's life every time his car pulled out of the driveway for a business trip.
He pressed a contact on his phone. "Marcus," Ethan said, his voice terrifyingly calm. Marcus was his head of private security. "I need you at the Willow Crest house right now. Bring a team. And Marcus? Deactivate Isabella's gate access and freeze her keycards."

"Ethan!" Isabella shrieked, dropping the wine glass entirely. It shattered against the marble, sending shards and red liquid everywhere. "You can't do this! I am your wife!"
Ethan finally looked at her. His gaze was devoid of the warmth he had offered her for the past five years. "No. You're a guest who has overstayed her welcome." He knelt down, scooped his soaking wet, trembling daughter into his arms, and walked out the front door, leaving Isabella screaming in the foyer.
