Chapter 2: The Refuge

Chapter 2: The Refuge
The penthouse suite at the Four Seasons in downtown Nashville was silent, bathed in the soft glow of the city lights. Ethan had ordered a mountain of warm food from room service, but Ava barely touched it. She sat on the edge of the plush velvet sofa, wrapped in a massive white hotel robe, her eyes darting nervously around the room.
"You don't have to clean anything here, sweetie," Ethan said softly, sitting a respectful distance away so as not to crowd her. "The hotel staff handles it all. You are completely safe."
Ava looked down at her hands. "Isabella said... she said if I didn't keep the house perfect, you would realize what a burden I am. She said you worked so hard because you didn't want to be around me."
The words hit Ethan like a physical blow to the chest. He closed his eyes, fighting back a wave of nausea and blinding rage. His late wife, Ava's biological mother, had passed away when Ava was only three. He had married Isabella hoping to give his daughter a complete family, throwing himself into his tech company to secure their financial future. He thought he was building an empire for Ava; instead, he had built a prison, leaving her with a warden.

"Ava, look at me," Ethan said, his voice thick with emotion. "You are the only reason I breathe. My biggest mistake was leaving you alone with her. But I promise you, on my life, she will never, ever be near you again."
For the first time since he walked through the door that afternoon, Ava began to cry. Ethan pulled her into a fierce embrace, letting her tears soak his expensive suit, vowing that tomorrow, he would tear Isabella's world apart.
