Chapter 15 - An Unexpected Alliance

The aftermath of the Winter Masquerade left Whispering Pines in a state of grim silence. The morning sun reflected blindingly off the fresh snow, but inside the executive suite, the atmosphere was dark and suffocating.

Vivian sat on a leather sofa in Maya’s office. She hadn't slept. She was still wearing her black and white maid's uniform, staring blankly at her bruised hands. Julian was gone, locked in a federal holding cell. Claire was gone, facing twenty years for attempted murder. Vivian was the only one left.

The heavy oak doors opened, and Maya walked in, followed by Marcus. Maya looked refreshed, wearing a sharp navy blue pantsuit, sipping an espresso.

"Brittany Pierce required twelve stitches and reconstructive surgery on her cheekbone," Maya stated casually, sitting behind her massive desk. "Claire will likely be pleading insanity. A tragic end to a prominent bloodline."

Vivian slowly looked up. "Why am I still here? Why didn't you have me arrested with Julian?"

Maya leaned back, studying Vivian with those terrifying, icy blue eyes. "Julian is a parasite. He was driven by ego and entitlement. He would never change. Claire was weak, driven by validation. She broke under pressure. But you, Vivian..."

Maya placed her espresso down. "You are a survivor. I watched the security footage of you in the wine cellar with Victoria. You didn't agree to the heist out of arrogance. You agreed out of pure, unadulterated desperation. You adapted to the game."

"I betrayed you," Vivian whispered, confused.

"You attempted to play a better hand," Maya corrected. "A failure, but a bold one. My grandmother believes people like you cannot be reformed. I believe that a perfectly forged blade must be thrust into the fire and hammered until the impurities are gone."

Maya slid a thick manila folder across the mahogany desk.

"What is this?" Vivian asked, not daring to touch it.

"When your father, Arthur Kensington, suffered his heart attack, he managed to trigger a failsafe protocol before the feds raided his offices," Maya explained. "He hid roughly three hundred million dollars in decentralized cryptocurrency and offshore shell companies. My auditors have spent six months trying to locate it, but the encryption key is tied to a physical asset. A family heirloom. Something only a Kensington would recognize."

Vivian’s breath hitched. She remembered the day her father collapsed. She remembered the frantic phone calls, the panic.

"You want me to help you steal my own family's money?" Vivian asked, horrified.

"I want you to recover the funds that your father embezzled from pension funds and small businesses," Maya corrected sharply. "Don't pretend to have moral high ground now, Vivian. That money belongs to the people your family crushed."

Maya stood up and walked around the desk, stopping in front of Vivian.

"Here is my offer," Maya said, her voice dropping to a low, commanding register. "You stop cleaning toilets. You take off that uniform. You become my personal liaison. You use your intimate knowledge of your father's associates, his habits, and his hidden properties to find that encryption key. You work directly for me, at my side."

Vivian stared at Maya. "And if I find it? What do I get?"

"I wipe your debt clean," Maya promised. "I release you from your contract. I will give you a one-way ticket to any country in the world and two million dollars to start a new life. You will never see me or my grandmother again."

It was a deal with the devil. Vivian knew it. Working as Maya’s right hand meant destroying the last remnants of her father's legacy. It meant fully submitting to the Sterlings. But she thought of Julian rotting in a cell. She thought of Claire screaming as they dragged her away. She thought of the blistered skin on her hands and the freezing snow.

Vivian stood up. She looked Maya dead in the eye, the shattered pieces of her pride slowly reassembling into something sharper, colder, and far more dangerous.

"I need a new wardrobe," Vivian said, her voice steady. "I won't hunt my father's money looking like a peasant."

May you like

Maya smiled—a slow, terrifyingly beautiful expression of victory.

"Marcus," Maya said, without breaking eye contact with Vivian. "Burn her uniform. Miss Kensington is joining the board."
