Chapter 7 - The Master of Puppets

Outside, in the suffocating humidity of the summer night, Julian Vance was dying a slow, agonizing death of the soul.

He was drenched in sweat, his legs burning with lactic acid. For six hours, he had been sprinting back and forth across the sprawling asphalt parking lot, retrieving Ferraris, Porsches, and Maybachs for men who used to beg for ten minutes of his time.

"Hey, Vance! Hustle up! My wife’s feet hurt!" shouted a balding, overweight real estate developer as he waved his valet ticket.

Julian clenched his teeth so hard he tasted copper. He broke into a light jog, retrieving a bright yellow McLaren. When he pulled it up to the curb, he stepped out, holding the door open.

The developer slid into the driver's seat, then paused. He looked down at his expensive Italian loafers, then back up at Julian. "Vance, it looks like there’s some mud on my tire. You brushed it against the curb, didn't you?"

"No, sir. I drove perfectly," Julian said, his voice flat.

"Are you calling me a liar?" The developer raised an eyebrow. "I'm a platinum member here. If I complain to management, you go back to a federal holding cell. Now. Clean the tire."

Julian’s vision went red. The billionaire shark inside him, the ruthless corporate raider who had decimated entire companies over breakfast, screamed to drag this fat pig out of the car and beat him senseless. His fists balled up at his sides.

Do it, a voice in his head urged. Punch him. Go to jail. At least in jail, you can sit down.

He took a step forward, his eyes burning with violent intent.

"Is there a problem here?"

The deep, rumbling voice stopped Julian dead in his tracks. Marcus, the towering, scarred head of Sterling Security, stepped out from the shadows of the valet booth. He was adjusting his earpiece, but his eyes were locked on Julian like a sniper's crosshairs.

"Vance here was just about to clean my tire," the developer said smugly.

Marcus looked at Julian. "Is that so, Employee 402? Remember the terms of your bail. Insubordination leads to immediate revocation. The District Attorney is very eager to see you in an orange jumpsuit."

Julian looked at Marcus, then at the smirking developer. The fight drained out of him, replaced by a crushing, suffocating despair. He was trapped in a cage made of his own hubris. He slowly lowered himself to the hot asphalt. Using the sleeve of his tacky red valet jacket, Julian Vance wiped the dirt off the tire of a man he despised.

"Good boy," the developer laughed, tossing a crumpled one-dollar bill out the window. It fluttered to the ground, landing in a puddle. The McLaren sped off into the night.

Julian stayed on his knees staring at the soggy dollar bill. A tear of pure, unadulterated frustration leaked from his eye, mixing with the sweat on his face.

Suddenly, a sleek black Maybach glided to a halt in front of the valet stand. The tinted window rolled down, revealing Maya Sterling sitting in the back seat, bathed in the soft glow of a reading light.

"A poignant image, isn't it?" Maya said, not looking up from a leather-bound dossier she was reading. "The King of Wall Street, kneeling in a puddle for a dollar."

Julian slowly stood up, his muscles aching. "You're enjoying this, aren't you?" he rasped. "Torturing us. Why don't you just kill me and get it over with?"

Maya finally looked up, her blue eyes piercing through the dark. "Kill you? That would be far too easy, Julian. Death is an escape. I want you to live. I want you to wake up every single morning at 5:00 AM, put on that cheap polyester uniform, and realize that you are nothing. I want you to understand that the empire you built was made of sand, and my grandmother was the ocean."

She tapped on the glass partition, signaling her driver.

May you like

"By the way," Maya added, her voice chillingly pleasant. "The pool filtration system failed this afternoon. Algae is building up. When your shift ends at 2:00 AM, you're on pool duty. I expect the tiles to shine by sunrise."

The Maybach rolled forward, disappearing down the long, tree-lined driveway, leaving Julian alone in the dark to face a sleepless night of backbreaking labor.
