Chapter 19 - Checkmate

The boardroom at the top of the Sterling Tower was a theater of war, and today, it was the site of a massacre.

The emergency shareholders meeting had been called by Victoria Sterling. She sat at the long mahogany table, flanked by her high-priced lawyers, looking smug and victorious. She had spent the last 48 hours leveraging every favor, blackmailing every board member, and utilizing massive short-sell attacks to force a vote of no confidence against her sister, Eleanor.

Eleanor sat at the head of the table, her hands folded neatly on the wood, her expression utterly serene. Maya stood to her right, and, to the shock of the entire board, Vivian Kensington stood to her left, holding a sleek black tablet.

"The numbers do not lie, Eleanor," Victoria gloated, tapping a manicured nail against her dossier. "Your sentimental approach to acquiring the Vance and Kensington assets has left the company overexposed. Furthermore, you failed to secure the Kensington crypto-cache, losing three hundred million dollars of potential capital. As the owner of forty percent of the voting shares, I am calling for your immediate resignation."

Murmurs rippled through the room. Several board members avoided Eleanor’s gaze, clearly having been bought by Victoria.

Eleanor sighed softly. "You always were so impatient, Victoria. You see a pawn and you attack it, never looking at the bishop waiting in the wings."

Eleanor gestured slightly to Vivian.

Vivian stepped forward, tapping the screen of her tablet. The massive digital screens behind Eleanor flared to life, displaying a web of complex international wire transfers, shell company structures, and offshore bank accounts.

"Two days ago," Vivian began, her voice ringing out clear and authoritative, commanding the room with the grace of a seasoned executive, "Victoria Sterling attempted an armed robbery in the Diamond District to secure my father's hidden crypto wallet."

Gasps erupted around the table. Victoria’s smug smile faltered. "Lies! Slander! I will sue you into oblivion, you little brat!"

"Let her finish, Victoria," Eleanor said sharply.

"She failed to secure the funds," Vivian continued, swiping to the next slide. "However, Maya and I did secure them. Three hundred million dollars in untraceable, decentralized currency. But we didn't put it in the Sterling charity fund as I told my father. We used it."

Vivian looked directly at Victoria, her eyes gleaming with predatory delight.

"We used the crypto to quietly purchase the distressed debt of Victoria’s three largest European holding companies through anonymous proxies," Vivian explained. "Companies that Victoria heavily over-leveraged to fund this hostile takeover attempt today. Once we controlled her debt, we executed a margin call."

Victoria shot up out of her chair, her face ashen white. "You... you couldn't have! The European banks wouldn't allow—"

"The European banks were very happy to accept three hundred million in liquid crypto," Maya interrupted, stepping forward to stand beside Vivian. The two women looked like twin angels of death. "As of 9:00 AM this morning, Eastern Standard Time, Victoria Sterling’s European empire is bankrupt. Her shares in Sterling International have been seized by the creditors to cover her margin calls."

Maya smiled, a terrifying, beautiful sight. "Creditors who are secretly owned by me."

The boardroom descended into absolute chaos. The lawyers representing Victoria began furiously typing on their phones, their faces registering pure panic as the financial reality set in. Victoria was ruined. In a matter of minutes, her forty years of ruthless corporate raiding had been entirely dismantled by her niece and a former socialite.

Victoria stared at Eleanor, her chest heaving. "You... you orchestrated this. You used the Kensington girl as bait!"

Eleanor finally smiled. It was a cold, chilling smile. "I simply provided the board. Maya and Vivian moved the pieces. You are finished, Victoria. Security will escort you from the building. If you ever set foot in this city again, I will have you arrested for the shootout in the Diamond District. Goodbye, sister."

Two massive Wraith guards entered the room, placing their hands on Victoria’s shoulders. The Black Widow of Berlin didn't fight. She looked completely broken, realizing she had been outplayed by the next generation. As they dragged her out, the remaining board members instantly fell in line, clapping and congratulating Eleanor and Maya.

Vivian stood near the window, looking out over the city. She felt a profound sense of closure. She had survived the fire, and she had forged herself into a weapon of undeniable power.

"You did well today, Vivian," a quiet voice said.

Vivian turned to see Eleanor standing beside her. The grand matriarch of the Sterling empire looked at Vivian with genuine respect.

"I thought you were nothing but a spoiled, cruel child when you slapped me at that wedding," Eleanor admitted softly. "I wanted to break you. But Maya saw something else. She saw a survivor. You have earned your place in this world."

May you like

"Thank you, Madam Sterling," Vivian bowed her head slightly.

"The debt is paid," Eleanor said, handing Vivian a thick manila envelope. "Your contract is void. You are free."
