Chapter 18 - The Fall of the Patriarch

The high-security wing of the Federal Medical Center in Massachusetts smelled of antiseptic and despair.
Arthur Kensington sat in a wheelchair, staring out the reinforced, barred window at the gray sky. He had aged twenty years in the span of six months. His once-thick hair was thin and white, and his skin hung off his face in loose, grayish folds. The heart attack had nearly killed him, but the stress of his collapsing empire had done the rest.
The heavy steel door of his hospital room buzzed and clicked open.
Arthur didn't turn around. "I told my lawyer I'm not signing the plea deal. I want a trial."
"You couldn't afford a trial even if you sold your own organs, Father."
Arthur gasped, violently spinning his wheelchair around. Standing in the doorway, flanked by a federal guard who immediately stepped out and closed the door, was Vivian.
She looked magnificent. She wore a tailored crimson coat over her suit, diamonds glittering at her ears, exuding the very power and wealth that had been violently stripped from their family.
"Vivian?" Arthur’s voice cracked. Tears welled in his sunken eyes. He reached out a trembling, liver-spotted hand. "My god, Vivian. They told me you were missing. I tried to find you! Where have you been? How did you get in here looking like that?"
Vivian slowly walked into the room, her Louboutins clicking against the linoleum floor. She didn't take his hand. She simply stood over him, looking down with eyes as cold as glacial ice.
"I was at Whispering Pines, Father," Vivian said softly. "Scrubbing toilets. Emptying grease traps. Bleeding onto the marble floors you used to walk on. All while you sat in here, trying to negotiate immunity."
Arthur pulled his hand back, his face flushing with shame. "I had no choice! The Sterlings took everything! I had to protect myself!"
"And what about me?" Vivian’s voice rose slightly, the edge of a blade showing through the velvet. "You left me to the wolves. You let Julian abuse me. You let Maya Sterling turn me into a slave. You had three hundred million dollars hidden in a crypto wallet, and you never even tried to buy my freedom."
Arthur’s eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated terror. "How... how do you know about that?"
Vivian reached into her designer bag and pulled out the mahogany music box. She set it on the sterile hospital tray next to his bed.
"Because I found it," Vivian whispered. "I went to Mom's vault. I opened the box. I memorized the key."
Arthur let out a ragged sob of relief. "Oh, thank God. Vivian, you're a genius. Listen to me. You need to contact Marcus Thorne. He can move the money. We can pay the judges, we can get me out of here. We can go to Dubai. We can rebuild!"
Vivian stared at the broken man before her. Once, he had been a god to her. A titan of industry who taught her that poor people were simply lazy, that wealth was a divine right, and that empathy was a weakness.
"I already moved the money, Father," Vivian said.
Arthur froze. "What? To where?"
"To the Sterling Group's global charity fund," Vivian replied, her voice deadpan. "Every single penny. It was distributed this morning to the pension funds of the small businesses you liquidated in the nineties. The money is gone."
Arthur stared at her, his mouth opening and closing like a suffocating fish. The monitors hooked up to his chest began to beep erratically as his heart rate skyrocketed.
"You... you gave it to them?" Arthur shrieked, clutching his chest. "You gave our fortune to Eleanor Sterling?! Are you insane?! You betrayed your own blood!"
"My blood left me to die," Vivian stated, stepping back toward the door. "Maya Sterling gave me a choice. You gave me nothing but a legacy of arrogance that almost destroyed me."
Arthur tried to stand up, his face purple with rage, but his legs gave out. He collapsed back into the wheelchair, gasping for air, clutching his hospital gown. "You are not my daughter. You are a traitor! You are nothing!"
May you like
"No, Father," Vivian said, pausing at the door and looking over her shoulder. "I am Vivian Kensington. I am the newest board member of Sterling International. And you are Employee Zero."
She knocked on the heavy steel door. The guard opened it immediately. Vivian stepped out into the hallway, leaving the echoing screams of her ruined father behind her. She didn't look back. The chain was broken.
