Chapter 10 - The House With No Safe RoomLuca ordered the estate locked down.

Nobody entered without Marco’s approval.
Nobody left without being searched.
Elena hated it.
Maya hated it more.
Luca hated that he agreed with both of them.
The mansion had more than thirty rooms.
Suddenly none felt safe.
Rachel continued Luca’s rehabilitation in secret.
His progress accelerated after the poisoned medication stopped.
Sensation returned first.
Then muscle control.
Then pain.
Pain became his strangest gift.
Every burning nerve reminded him that something was alive.
One afternoon, Rachel placed Luca between parallel bars.
“Try.”
He gripped the rails.
His arms carried most of his weight.
His legs trembled violently.
For two seconds, nothing happened.
Then his knees locked.
Luca rose.
Only four inches.
Then six.
Then he was standing.
Not independently.
Not steadily.
But standing.
Twelve years disappeared from his face.
Marco watched from the doorway.
Elena stood beside him.
Neither spoke.
Luca remained upright for five seconds.
Then seven.
Then his legs failed.
Rachel lowered him safely into the chair.
Luca laughed.
It was the first uncontrolled laugh Elena had ever heard from him.
Maya ran into the room.
“You did it.”
“I cheated.”
“You stood.”
“With half the room holding me.”
“You still stood.”
She hugged him.
That evening, Luca made a decision.
Nobody outside those four people would know.
To Vittorio, Luca remained permanently paralyzed.
To Damian.
To Jonathan.
To anyone helping them.
The chair would remain part of the trap.
Marco discovered Jonathan’s abandoned vehicle near Lake Michigan.
Inside was blood.
Not much.
Enough to suggest injury.
His wallet remained in the console.
His phone was gone.
Marco believed someone had silenced him.
Luca was not convinced.
“Jonathan survives by looking helpless when he isn’t.”
Two hours later, Elena received an email.
It appeared to come from Maya’s school.
Emergency parent meeting.
Mandatory attendance.
Elena almost clicked the attached link.
Marco stopped her.
The message was fake.
The attachment contained tracking software.
Someone wanted Elena’s location.
Minutes later, another message arrived.
This one contained a photograph of her old apartment.
The caption read.
YOU SHOULD HAVE STAYED THERE.
Elena stared at it.
Luca watched her expression change.
Fear disappeared.
Anger replaced it.
“No more hiding.”
“Elena.”
“No.”
She faced him.
“They watched my daughter.”
“They moved us.”
“They manipulated my jobs.”
“They intercepted my letters.”
“And now they think threatening me will make me disappear?”
Luca had rarely seen anyone challenge danger with such cold certainty.
“I’m not leaving.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
She looked at him.
“And Maya isn’t property in your trust.”
“I know.”
“She doesn’t belong to Vittorio.”
“I know.”
“She doesn’t belong to you either.”
That one hurt.
Luca answered anyway.
“I know.”
Elena softened.
“She belongs to herself.”
“Yes.”
Maya’s voice came from the hallway.
“That was very dramatic.”
Both adults turned.
She stood holding a baseball glove.
Then she looked at Luca.
“Can we play?”
Luca glanced at his legs.
“Not yet.”
Maya smiled.
“You said that about standing.”
Then she walked away.
Luca watched her go.
Somewhere in the house, an enemy was still listening.
May you like
But now Luca had something more dangerous than anger.
He had a future he intended to reach.
