Chapter 14 - The Man Who Stood in SecretLuca trained harder than Rachel wanted.

Every morning began before sunrise.

Every session ended in pain.

His muscles shook.

His back burned.

His knees refused commands his mind gave them.

Some days he gained inches.

Other days he lost them.

Rachel repeatedly reminded him recovery was not a straight line.

Luca hated that sentence.

He had built his life by forcing straight lines through chaos.

His body did not care.

On the sixth morning, he walked three steps.

Parallel bars supported him.

Rachel stood beside him.

Elena watched from the doorway.

One step.

Then another.

Then a third.

Luca stopped.

He could hear his heartbeat.

Elena covered her mouth.

Luca looked at her.

“Well?”

She smiled.

“You still look grumpy.”

He laughed.

Then his legs gave out.

Rachel caught him.

Three steps were enough.

The public version of Luca remained unchanged.

He appeared at meetings in his wheelchair.

He complained about worsening weakness.

Fake medical reports suggested cognitive fatigue.

Vittorio relaxed.

That was exactly what Luca wanted.

Jonathan Pierce finally resurfaced.

Federal agents arrested him at a motel near Milwaukee.

The blood in his abandoned car had been staged.

He had intended to disappear after the SUV attack.

Under questioning, Jonathan initially denied everything.

Then investigators showed him the hidden-room recordings.

His loyalty collapsed.

Jonathan confirmed Vittorio had ordered the continued poisoning.

He also confirmed something worse.

Carlo Costello had originally approved temporary chemical suppression.

But when Carlo demanded it stop, Vittorio secretly continued.

Jonathan had helped hide the records.

Years later, Carlo planned to confess to Luca.

Two days before he could, he died.

Jonathan claimed he did not know exactly how.

But he had seen Vittorio leave Carlo’s bedroom shortly before the medical emergency.

That detail was enough to reopen the investigation into Carlo’s death.

Luca listened without emotion.

He had spent years missing his father.

Now grief had become something complicated.

Carlo had betrayed him.

Then apparently tried to undo it.

A late regret did not erase the crime.

But Luca refused to let Vittorio use Carlo’s guilt as protection.

The night before Maya’s birthday, Vittorio called.

“I hear you’re declining.”

Luca allowed silence into his voice.

“Doctors talk too much.”

“You should let me handle things.”

“You already handle too much.”

Vittorio chuckled.

“Tomorrow will be difficult.”

“Why?”

“Crowds.”

“Family.”

“Memories.”

Luca understood the hidden message.

Tomorrow was the deadline.

“I’ll manage.”

“I know you will.”

Vittorio paused.

“You always were stubborn.”

After the call, Luca looked at Marco.

“He’s coming.”

Marco checked the surveillance plan.

Federal agents would be positioned around the estate.

Every room would be recorded.

Damian had agreed to wear a transmitter.

Jonathan would not participate.

Authorities considered him too unreliable.

Elena entered.

“Maya’s asleep.”

“Good.”

“She asked whether tomorrow changes everything.”

Luca looked toward the dark windows.

“It will.”

Elena studied him.

“You don’t have to prove anything by standing tomorrow.”

Luca knew what she meant.

His recovery belonged to him.

It did not need to become theater.

“I’m not standing for Vittorio.”

“Then who?”

Luca looked toward the stairs leading to Maya’s room.

“My daughter has only ever seen me in this chair.”

Elena smiled softly.

“She never cared.”

“I know.”

That was exactly why he wanted her to see.

Not because walking made him whole.

He already was.

May you like

But because Vittorio had stolen the choice.

Tomorrow, Luca intended to take it back.
