Chapter 8 - The Trap Inside the TrustJonathan Pierce arrived at the estate the next morning.

Luca had not summoned him.

That made his arrival useful.

Jonathan had served the Costello family for twenty-seven years.

He walked into the study carrying the confidence of a man who believed paperwork could hide anything.

“I heard Dr. Vale resurfaced.”

Luca looked toward him.

Again, information moved too quickly.

“News travels.”

Jonathan sat down.

“Your uncle is concerned.”

“My uncle seems concerned about many things lately.”

Jonathan smiled politely.

Luca placed the family trust on the desk.

“I want you to explain Section Forty-Seven.”

Jonathan’s face did not change.

His eyes did.

Only slightly.

But Luca saw it.

“Section Forty-Seven?”

“The heir provision.”

Jonathan adjusted his glasses.

“It’s an old clause.”

“Explain it.”

Jonathan began speaking like an attorney.

The clause had been written by Luca’s grandfather.

If a controlling Costello heir became medically incapable of managing the family’s primary holdings, authority could transfer temporarily to a senior trustee.

If that person had a biological child, the child became beneficiary.

Until adulthood, the senior trustee retained substantial control.

Vittorio was the senior trustee.

Luca leaned back.

“So if I were declared mentally incapable…”

“Vittorio would manage the trust.”

“And Maya would inherit after me.”

“Assuming paternity was established.”

Luca stared at him.

“Which Vittorio arranged.”

Jonathan became very still.

“I don’t know what you mean.”

“You hired Elena.”

“I did no such thing.”

Luca slid the employment application across the desk.

Vittorio’s handwritten instruction was visible.

Jonathan looked at it.

“That proves nothing.”

Luca placed the intercepted letters beside it.

For the first time, Jonathan lost color.

“These were found in a storage unit.”

Jonathan said nothing.

“Your corporate office paid for that unit.”

Still nothing.

Luca leaned forward.

“You threatened Ernesto Ruiz twelve years ago.”

Jonathan stood.

“I think this conversation should end.”

Luca smiled.

“That’s the first intelligent thing you’ve said.”

Jonathan moved toward the door.

Marco blocked it.

No weapon.

No threat.

Just his body.

Jonathan turned.

“You can’t hold me here.”

“No.”

Luca nodded toward the desk.

“But I can fire you.”

Jonathan laughed nervously.

“After twenty-seven years?”

“Especially after twenty-seven years.”

Luca removed a document.

“Your access to every Costello account was terminated fifteen minutes ago.”

Jonathan’s expression shattered.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.”

“I’m learning quickly.”

“You think Vittorio is the only person protecting this family?”

“I think men like you have spent decades confusing the family with yourselves.”

Jonathan looked at Marco.

Then back at Luca.

“You start pulling threads, everything comes apart.”

“Good.”

Jonathan’s voice became harder.

“Your father understood something you never did.”

“What?”

“An empire survives because some truths stay buried.”

Luca looked toward the baseball field where Maya was practicing with her tutor.

“My daughter spent eight years being secretly watched because people like you buried the truth.”

Jonathan’s eyes followed his gaze.

That was his mistake.

Luca noticed something.

Fear.

Not of Luca.

Of Maya.

Before Luca could question it, alarms sounded outside.

Marco’s radio exploded with voices.

A vehicle had breached the east service gate.

It accelerated toward the main grounds.

Elena and Maya were outside.

Luca spun his chair toward the windows.

The black SUV crossed the lawn.

Straight toward the baseball field.

And for the first time since learning the truth, Luca forgot revenge completely.

He had only one thought.

His daughter was standing in its path.
